In addition to their seven-member draft class, the Jets have signed 13 undrafted free agents who will work with the club at this weekend's rookie minicamp at the team's Atlantic Health Training Center. The uniform numbers assigned to the players for the camp (which are subject to change) appear after their names below.
WR Robby Anderson, 83, Temple (6'3", 190) — Anderson's 70 receptions and 939 receiving yards last season rank second on Temple's all-time list. A cornerback who left the team in 2013, Anderson came back as a non-scholarship athlete, transitioned to wideout, and set a school record that season with 239 receiving yards against SMU. He flew to a 4.34 time in his 40-yard dash at the Owls pro day.
NT Tarow Barney, 60, Penn State (6'1", 305) — After transferring from Northwest Mississippi Community College, Barney played 25 games with the Nittany Lions. In two seasons at PSU, he totaled 16 tackles and 2.5 sacks. The Bainbridge, GA, native graduated in December with a degree in criminology.
WR Quenton Bundrage, 1, Iowa State (6'2", 198) — The Palmetto, FL, native finished second on the Cyclones last season in receptions (41), receiving yards (548) and TD catches (4). Before missing the 2014 campaign with a knee injury, Bundrage paced Iowa State with nine TD catches and 48 catches in 2013. His 15 career scoring receptions rank second in school annals while his 1,456 yards place him ninth.
C Kyle Friend, 63, Temple (6'2", 305) — Along with Owls teammate Tyler Matakevich, Friend became the first three-time captain in school history. A four-year letterwinner, Friend appeared in 43 games for the Owls and made 41 starts. After not being invited to the NFL Combine, he benched 41 reps at 225 pounds and he also posted a 5.09 time in the 40-yard dash. (Below, he's practicing at the NFLPA Collegiate Bowl.)
P Tom Hackett, 6, Utah (5'11", 195) — A two-time Ray Guy Award winner as the nation's top punter, Hackett finished second all-time at Utah in career average (45.2). His 68 punts of 50-plus yards set a school mark and he also had four punts cover at least 70 yards. Last season, Hackett averaged 48 yards per boot and his 23 punts of 50+ yards led the Pac-12. He also placed 21% of his career punts (51-of-242) inside the 10-yard line. A Melbourne, Australia, native who also lived in Tokyo growing up, he will be one of two punters from Down Under at rookie minicamp as the Jets selected Sam Houston State's Lachlan Edwards in Round 7.
WR Jalin Marshall, 89, Ohio State (5'11", 205) — A teammate of Jets first-round selection LB Darron Lee, Marshall ranked third in the Big Ten last season with a 13.5-yard punt return average. He played 15 games in 2014 and his 38 receptions rank second only to Pro Football Hall of Famer Cris Carter (41 in 1984) for most receptions by an OSU freshman. In 27 contests with the Buckeyes, Marshall (top photo of story vs. Notre Dame) totaled 13 touchdowns and produced 1,905 all-purpose yards. His 12.7-yard punt return average ranks fifth in school annals. A former star high school quarterback at Middletown, OH, he decided to forgo his final two years of eligibility.
K Ross Martin, 8, Duke (5'10", 185) — One of three players in ACC history with 400-plus points, Martin connected on eight of his 10 field goal attempts from 50 yards or longer. He set a Duke single-season record for field goals made and points in 2015 as he was successful on 26 of his 30 attempts (87%) and finished with 120 points. Martin, who connected on a pair of field goals in the Senior Bowl, drilled a wind-aided 60-yarder during practice week down in Mobile, AL.
DE Helva Matungulu, 61-G, Western Carolina (6'5", 290) — Having only played organized football the past five years, Matungulu began along the offensive line in 2011 and 2012. But the Kenya native, who speaks three languages and was part of a provincial championship rugby team in Nairobi, transitioned to defense and collected 53 tackles, three sacks and seven TFL from 2013-15. Matungulu played in the NFLPA Collegiate Bowl in California.
S Doug Middleton, 39, Appalachian State (6'0", 210) — An All-Sun Belt Conference honorable mention performer, Middleton tied for sixth on the Mountaineers with 53 tackles last season. In 2014, he started 12 games at free safety and tied for third in the Sun Belt in interceptions (4) and was fourth in passes defended (10). As a freshman, he returned his first career interception 97 yards for a touchdown against North Carolina A&T. A business management major, Middleton helped lobby the North Carolina Legislature for a new $79 million building to house App State's Beaver College of Health Sciences.
DE Julien Obioha, 65, Texas A&M (6'4", 280) — In four seasons under Ken Sumlin, "Obi" totaled 137 tackles and racked up 4.5 sacks. His pro day numbers included 27 reps of 225 pounds along with a 27" vertical leap. A university studies major (architecture), Obioha also had double minors in business administration and mathematics.
DE Claude Pelon, 66-G, Southern Cal (6'4", 300) — At USC's pro day, Pelon benched 33 reps at 225 pounds in addition to posting a 9'2" on the broad jump and a 35" vertical leap. Pelon, who was a JUCO All-American at Mesa (Ariz.) Community College, becomes the third Trojan on the roster as he battled in the trenches with Leonard Williams in 2014 while S Dion Bailey is entering his third NFL season.
DE Lawrence Thomas, 97, Michigan State (6'4", 305) — The four-year letterwinner (shown above at the NFL Combine) appeared in 47 games for the Spartans and started the final 27 games of his career. Thomas registered a career high with 38 tackles last season and equaled his 2014 sack total with three. He also ranked third on the team with six passes defended. After starting 12 games at NT his junior season, Thomas moved outside and started 13 contests at DE as a senior. His sack of Bryce Petty in the 2015 Cotton Bowl helped Sparty claim a dramatic 42-41 comeback triumph over the Baylor Bears. Thomas entered Michigan State as a linebacker, served as a fullback for Le'Veon Bell and then moved to the defensive line in 2012.
TE Jason Vander Laan, 49, Ferris State (6'4", 244) — Billed as the nation's top dual-threat quarterback on Ferris State's website, the two-time Harlon Hill Trophy winner will attempt to play tight end for the Jets. Vander Laan, who became the first player in NCAA history to pass and run for 1,000 yards in four consecutive seasons, led the Bulldogs to a 37-9 record. His 5,953 career rush yards are the most for a quarterback in NCAA history. Last season, Vander Laan rushed for 1,542 yards and the two-time team captain amassed 51 total touchdowns along the way.
