There's nothing like a player-for-player trade to spice up the offseason just a little. And that's what the Jets and Browns have done, with the Jets sending safety Calvin Pryor west and former Cleveland linebacker Demario Davis returning east to the team that drafted him in the third round in 2012.
It's the second time in a month that the teams have done business. General manager Mike Maccagnan struck a day-three-of-the-draft deal with the Browns in April when he traded down, sending away two picks and picking up two that turned into LB Dylan Donahue and RB Elijah McGuire.
All of which adds some texture to this season's Oct. 8 meeting between the teams at Cleveland's FirstEnergy Stadium.
And today's transactions continue the business relationships between the teams that, as all Jets fans know, first got together for the first Monday Night Football telecast back on opening night in 1970.
In 2009, in fact, the Jets and Browns executed two big trades. First, on the morning of the draft they concluded negotiations by sending two picks and three players to Cleveland for the fifth overall pick, with which they selected QB Mark Sanchez. Almost six months later, the Green & White were at it again, trading two picks and two players for Browns WR Braylon Edwards.
Those deals involved both players and draft choices. Player-for-player trades are relatively rare in the NFL. The last one the Jets executed came in late August 2012, when they and the Rams swapped tackles, Wayne Hunter for Jason Smith.
Yet even in this category, the Jets and Browns tried to execute a player-for-player trade during 2006 training camp. That's when the Jets, searching for a possible featured tailback, traded CB Derrick Strait for RB Lee Suggs. However, that deal was nullified when Suggs didn't pass his Jets physical.
Here is a history of trades between the Jets and Browns since 1970:
January 1980 — Jets trade DT Marshall Harris for Browns' 8th-round pick (DB J.C. Watts).
July 1983 — Jets trade WR Bobby Jones for Browns' 8th-round pick (P Brett Wright).
August 2006 — Jets traded CB Derrick Strait for Browns RB Lee Suggs (trade nullified when Suggs didn't pass physical).
April 2009 — Jets trade 1st-round pick (17th overall) and 2nd-round pick (52nd), DE Kenyon Coleman, S Abram Elam and QB Brett Ratliff for Browns' 1st-round pick (5th overall), with which the Jets selected QB Mark Sanchez.
October 2009 — Jets trade 3rd- and 5th-round picks, WR Chansi Stuckey and LB Jason Trusnik for Browns WR Braylon Edwards.
April 2017 — Jets trade 5th- and 7th-round picks for Browns' 5th-rounder (LB Dylan Donahue) and 6th-rounder (RB Elijah McGuire).
