On the field with his new teammates during the second phase of the Jets' offseason program, veteran signal caller Josh McCown is enjoying his time getting reunited with QB coach Jeremy Bates and offensive coordinator John Morton.
"It's been great to be back with Jeremy Bates. I spent about three weeks or so in San Francisco when John Morton was out there, so I've known him from back then," McCown said recently. "To get his playbook and get to watch him teach and install these plays has been great. He's doing a heck of a job and it's been nice in Phase Two to get on the grass with those guys to throw the ball around and start to see these plays come to life a little bit."
The 37-year-old McCown, who has suited up with seven NFL teams and has been a member of 10 league clubs, is no stranger to learning new systems and languages.
"I think we're all excited as an offense about where we can go. We have a lot of young guys and it's new for everybody," he said. "I think it's a good thing because we're in this thing together, learning it together and I think down the road, we'll benefit from that. That's a trust building thing because it's a shared experience, we're in this thing together. We want to see how far we can take this thing."
McCown was a member of the Bears from 2011-13 and Bates was Chicago's QB coach in 2012.
"JB is a fantastic football coach. As far as quarterbacks go, he just gets it," McCown said. "He sees it and understands what we need to help us improve. Not only from a holistic standpoint of playing the position and everything that being a quarterback in the NFL entails, but he can also watch you mechanically with your feet and those things. That's a rare blend in this league to have a quarterback coach that can see the game. He's called plays before when he was in Denver, so those things have tremendous value. I'm so glad that Jeremy is here and that was a big part of me being a part of this group. I know that he'll get the best out of me and he'll certainly get the best out of these young quarterbacks."
