The Jets have hired Jeff Hammerschmidt as special teams assistant coach. He will assist Brant Boyer, who was added to head coach Todd Bowles' staff Thursday as special teams coordinator.
Hammerschmidt, 46, brings a wealth of coaching experience with him to the Green & White from the college level. He held the title of special teams coordinator at Colorado State for the past four seasons and also coached running backs (2012-14) and tight ends ('15) there. In 2015 the Rams' kickoff returners averaged 25.1 yards/return with one touchdown and his punt returners averaged 12.6 yards/return with two TDs.
Before CSU, Hammerschmidt had eight years of ST experience in the Pac-10/12 and the Big Ten. He also has seven years of experience as a defensive coordinator, at Southern Utah, St. Mary's and Montana, and has coached every defensive position.
Among the players he's coached were future NFL standouts Antwaan Randle El and Adewale Ogunleye at Indiana and consensus All-American S Tony Bouie at Arizona.
Hammerschmidt and Boyer played college ball together on the University of Arizona defense in the early Nineties.
