The Jets have signed free agent wide receiver/kick returner Jeremy Ross.
Ross (6'0", 215), who turned 28 last month, is entering his fourth full NFL season. He comes to the Jets after finishing last year with the Oakland Raiders, then not receiving a tender offer as a restricted free agent in March.
He began his NFL career as an undrafted free agent out of California (4.44-second 40 time at his pro day) with New England in July 2011. He was with the Patriots and Colts in '11 but never played a game for either team. He did play for Green Bay in '12, Detroit in '13-14, and the Ravens and Raiders last season.
In his pro career Ross has played in 45 games (15 starts) with his main contributions coming on returns. He has 77 punt returns for an average of 11.2 yards/return and 66 kickoff returns for 25.1 yards/return.
His highlight video game came at Philadelphia in Week 14 of the 2013 season, when he took a punt return 58 yards and a kickoff return 98 yards, both for touchdowns, in the second half of the Lions' 34-20 loss to the Eagles. He's the most recent NFL returner to take a punt and a kickoff to the house in the same game, joining a list that in the past 10 seasons includes Trindon Holliday, Ted Ginn, Eddie Royal, Devin Hester and Darren Sproles
On offense Ross has 39 receptions for 469 yards (12.0 yards/catch) and three touchdowns, plus five rushes for 41 yards. In Detroit's game against the Jets at MetLife Stadium on Sept. 28, 2014, he had a career-long 59-yard catch-and-run from Matt Stafford.
