January 2, Curt By A Nose
RB Curtis Martin gained just enough in the regular-season finale at St. Louis, 153 yards on 28 carries, to edge Seattle’s Shaun Alexander by a single yard for the NFL’s 2004 rushing title. Martin, with 1,697 yards, became just the second player in club history to capture the prestigious title, 23 years after Freeman McNeil.

LB Jonathan Vilma, the Jets' first-round draft choice, was named NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year.
January 15, Working Overtime
The Jets became the first NFL team to play three consecutive overtime games, including their regular-season-ending 32-29 loss in St. Louis (Jan. 2), their 20-17 Wild Card win at San Diego (Jan. 8) and their heartbreaking 20-17 Divisional Round loss at Pittsburgh.
August 8, N.Y. Law
The Jets announced the signing of free agent CB Ty Law, who played in four Pro Bowls and three Super Bowls and intercepted 40 passes in his first 10 seasons with the New England Patriots.
September 25, Chad Cuffed II
Chad Pennington, who accelerated his rehab and opened the season as the Jets' starting QB, suffered the second rotator cuff tear in his right shoulder in less than a year when his arm was yanked from behind as he was trying to pass against Jacksonville. He then underwent arthroscopic surgery, his second shoulder operation in eight months (Oct. 6).
September 27, Vinny Redux
Vinny Testaverde, out of work since being released by Dallas after the previous season, was signed as the emergency backup to Brooks Bollinger after Pennington and No. 2 QB Jay Fielder were injured vs. the Jaguars. Testaverde moved into the starting lineup and directed an inspirational 14-12 home win over Tampa Bay (Oct. 9) before losing his next three starts and handing the reins back to Bollinger.
November 6, Wayne's World Rocked
WR Wayne Chrebet hit the Meadowlands FieldTurf hard after making a late third-down catch and holding on for a first down against San Diego. Chrebet suffered a season-ending concussion that he later pegged as the 13th of his college and pro career.
