The Jets (3-6) beat the Texans (6-3), 21-13, at MetLife Stadium on Thursday night. Here are three takeaways from the game.
Defense Wreaks Havoc
The Jets' defense, which ranked No. 6 in QB pressure rate (38.3%) and sacks (23), entering Thursday night's game, sacked Texans QB C.J. Stroud 8 times. It's the first time since 2013 that the team has had 8 sacks in a gamesince 2013.
DL Micheal Clemons and LB Jamien Sherwood each had 2 sacks, Quinnen Williams had 1.5 for the second consecutive game, Solomon Thomas and D.J. Reed each had 1 while Haason Reddick was credited with a half-sack, his first with the Green & White.
Reddick, in his second game since ending his holdout, generated 8 pressures on 32 pass rushes, which are the second most by a Jets pass rusher in a game this season.
"He's done a great job, man," DT Javon Kinlaw said. "Even coming in here, just fitting in with the guys he's a heck of a teammate, first and foremost. He applies pressure to the quarterback, he hits the quarterback. It was going to take him a minute to get it going, knock that rust off. For him to come in and have 8 pressures, it was amazing."
Will McDonald IV, whose 8 sacks this season rank No. 2 in the NFL, did not take the QB down but still made an impact impacted the game. He generated a season-high 9 pressures on 33 pass rushes (27.3%) and he's now generated at least a 20% pressure rate in six games this season, which is the most in the NFL.
Offensive Line Shuffle
The Jets offensive line shuffled midgame because of injuries. Right guard Jake Hanson, who was starting for the injured Alijah Vera-Tucker (ankle) for a second straight week, sustained a hamstring injury in the second quarter and was replaced by rookie Olu Fashanu. Fashanu, drafted No. 11 overall, played left tackle at Penn State and one preseason game at right tackle.
"Coach [Keith] Carter just told me, 'Hey, if the opportunity comes, you're going go in at guard,' " Fashanu said. "At first I was like, 'Oh, OK. Let's go.' It helps that I have such a great center in [Joe Tippmann] and such a great tackle that has a ton of experience like Morgan [Moses] does. So, I always know I was going to be in good hands playing with those guys."
Left guard John Simpson exited the game in the second quarter with a groin injury and was replaced by Max Mitchell, who had not played guard in his 22 career games (12 starts) over three seasons.
"I went into the game knowing that I was going to be one of the first guys in, so I had a mentality coming to the game that I was ready to go whatever happened," Mitchell said. "You got to go out there and you got to make the most opportunity. You do. It's a crazy league and I hate to see as many guards as we have go down. You never want to see that. So, I'm just trying to make the most opportunity."
Miscues
The Jets had their fair share of miscues in the first half that prevented the offense from finding its rhythm.
WR Davante Adams, who led the team with 91 receiving yards and scored the game-sealing touchdown, sprung free down the sideline on the team's first play, but Aaron Rodgers' pass sailed wide out of bounds.
Breece Hall dropped a checkdown pass the following play that set up a third-and-long the Jets did not convert. Hall, on the following possession, recovered his own fumble on a series that also resulted in a three-and-out.
The most glaring miscue came in the second quarter in what appeared to be rookie Malachi Corley's first NFL touchdown. Corley went untouched on an end-around behind a convoy of blockers but dropped the ball before crossing the goal line. It rolled out of the end zone, which resulted in a touchback.
"Definitely frustrated, to be honest, and angry at the same time," interim HC Jeff Ulbrich said of his emotions of the play. "But what an amazing opportunity for this kid to grow and learn from. I promise you 10 years from now when he's still playing in this league, that will never happen again."
Ulbrich said he told Corley on the sideline: "First of all, you can't do that and second of all, you owe us one."
