Aaron Glenn recorded 661 tackles over 15 NFL seasons. Prior to his first Q&A as head coach of the New York Jets, Glenn, the former star cornerback, decided to tackle the quarterback topic before taking any inquires.
"Just a couple of things I want to nip in the bud before I get to the Q&A," Glenn said at the Atlantic Health Jets Training Center on Monday. "I got the job on Wednesday. Moog [GM Darren Mougey] came and got the job on Saturday. We came here on Sunday and we started talking. Here's what I do know – Aaron Rodgers will be talked about, it will be talked about. We've already texted that communication with Aaron Rodgers. And as we continue to look at the roster, we'll make decisions accordingly. And that's with a number of people on the team."
In the 17 games started last season, Rodgers hit on 63% of his passes for 3,897 yards with 28 TDs and 11 INTs. Rodgers, who said he plans a mental and physical rest this offseason, has expressed gratitude about his time with the Jets. Glenn and Mougey must determine their plan at quarterback among several other things. Rodgers' cap number for 2025 is $23.5 million, but the Jets will reportedly take a $49 million dead money charge if he retires or is cut. If Rodgers played under his existing deal in 2025 and was cut in 2026, the dead money charge would be $63 million. Rodgers hasn't decided whether he wants to play a 21st NFL season.
"Me and Moug are going to sit and talk and go over the whole roster," Glenn said. "I would tell you now that is going to be the answer to a number of questions when it comes to the roster in general. We're looking forward to that process. I can't tell you how long that process will be, but the thing is we're going to make sure we get the right answer. And we're not going to rush to this answer. We're going to get the right answer."
"First and foremost, I have the most respect for Aarron Rodgers and what he's done in this league as a player, one of the greatest of all-time to play the position, one of the greatest players of all-time," added Mougey. "I know Aaron has his process in the offseason that he goes through. We have ours but that day's going to come. I don't have a timeline on it, but I look forward to it."
Following the news conference, Glenn was asked about Rodgers in a breakout session with the media. And the head coach once again emphasized the team.
"We're already texted Aaron," he said. "And me and Moug are going to sit there and watch every game tape there is and then we're going to look at the whole roster. This thing is not about Aaron Rodgers folks. This is about the roster and we plan on building the best roster that we can. So whatever that may be – guard, tackle, defensive tackle – that's what we're evaluating. And listen, everybody is under the microscope. That's just what it is, so we're going to do the best we can to make sure we build the best roster."
