Aaron Rodgers on a Jolly Good Jets Showing in London: 'It Starts with Me'

Green & White Seek to Regain Their Efficiency from Games 2-3 vs. the 4-0 Vikings on Sunday

You knew Aaron Rodgers had arrived in London Town when the British vocabulary came out of the boot.

For instance, Rodgers, who played at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium for the Packers against the Giants in 2022, reminded his Jets teammates: "Don't be gobsmacked by what you see in the crowd. There's going to be a lot of different jerseys. I'm not sure what the split will be. ... It's a fun environment, a good field and great fans."

Then regarding the option to go with a quick, short passing game against the Vikings pressure defense, he said: "You've got to push and pull. You can't get knackered with throwing quick-game stuff. You've got to take what the defense is giving you and you've got to be patient. ... You've got to fight the urge to force things. And for me, I have to fight the urge to do too much."

But there are no reservations on the quarterback's and the Jets' parts after struggling in their 10-9 MetLife Stadium loss to Denver and now about to take on the 4-0 Vikings who historically are 3-0 in their London appearances. Rodgers said the Green & White are ready to put on a show Sunday.

"We've been up and down," he said of the Jets' 2-2 start. "We came off a good Thursday night game where we were efficient in all areas and then just didn't play well at home. So we're still trying to to find a way to get the ball in space to our guys, get our best 11 on the field. And it starts with me. I've got to be efficient and deal the ball when necessary, hold onto the ball when necessary, and make sure we're good on first and second down this week."

A weekly storyline is Rodgers and WR Garrett Wilson coming together for a monster game, which this week may well be needed to counteract the connections between Vikings QB Sam Darnold and elite WR Justin Jefferson. Wilson is averaging five catches a game but at 9.6 yards/catch and with one 2-yard TD toss from Rodgers in the New England win.

"It's just the details," Rodgers said. "We've got to be on the same page, so conversations that we have are important, me seeing the game through his eyes, him seeing the game through my eyes, and just going out there and executing. I don't think it's big changes. Things are close and one of these weeks we'll put it together."

Head coach Robert Saleh was optimistic that the Rodgers offense will rebound smartly with better pocket security than he received in getting sacks five times and hit 14 times by the Broncos rush.

"We're always going to do our best to to protect him, whether it's extra people in protection, running the football, getting the ball in and out of his hands as quickly as possible," Saleh said. "But let's be real. You've got to win in this league, and it's an explosive league. You've got to be able to create explosives, and you have to pick and choose your battles. But I think Aaron will be a lot better this week, and so will the O-line."

Saleh acknowledged the reality of the league, which has always been "When you win, you're going to the Super Bowl, and when you lose, fire everybody." That won't change with a win or a loss on their third appearance on the big London stage. But the HC understands the NYC dynamics involved, and so does the QB, who responded to a British reporter's question about the Jets and their following.

"I think you have to understand the Jets fans in America and what they've gone through the last 13 years, and really the last 55 years of not winning the Super Bowl," he said. "So I think sports fans in general can get behind an underdog or a team that hasn't had the success they've wanted to in a while. And I welcome any and all bandwagon fans to jump on the underdog train of the New York Jets and try and bring some positivity to our fans who've dealt with a lot."

That was an international response, more for the British fans in the stands, many of whom are already fans of the Jets from seasons past but many more who may be deciding whether to roll with the Green & White or the Purple & Gold.

The best way for Rodgers and the Jets to crank up that bandwagon is to get ahead early, play 60 minutes instead of the 30 minutes Rodgers' Pack played in the 27-22 loss in '22, and fly back east with a verdict against the previously undefeated Vikes that will gobsmack the fans back home. In a good way, of course.
