QB Aaron Rodgers Steers Jets to Stirring Fourth-Quarter Outburst

‘Magical’ Big-Play Connections to WR Davante Adams Just Like Old Times

Jeff Ulbrich called it "magical." Aaron Rodgers said it was "special."

Regardless of the adjectives, the Jets' 32-25 victory at Jacksonville on Sunday was memorable and in many ways a release. After losing four-straight games, the Green & White (4-10) fashioned a strong, complementary performance in which the defense held fast when it counted, the offensive line gave Rodgers time to carve up the Jaguars' (3-11) defense and veteran wide receiver Davante Adams was able to enjoy a feast in the second half.

"You play for the love of the game, moments like this, with your boys, be able to come up big," said Rodgers, who was 16 of 30 for 289 yards and 3 TD passes, while also leading the Jets' rushing attack with 45 yards on 6 carries -- and notched the 34th game-winning drive of his storied, 20-year NFL career.

"It's been a long time since I led a team in rushing," Rodgers said flashing an ear-to-ear smile after the game. "I take a lot of pride in my minimal athleticism, but you know, this is what I trained so hard for during those nine months [after his Achilles tendon injury last year]. You know, three [months] to try to get back early, and then the six to get all the way back to where I was to be able to move around. You see it the last few weeks.

"You know, it's too little too late, but still, special, doesn't taint it at all, doesn't steal any of the joy, doesn't take away any of the fun that's going to be on the bus just now and then on the plane, and we have another bus back to the facility."

For the most part, the Jaguars managed to keep the ball out of Rodgers' hands through much of the first half. The Jets had a mere trio of possessions. Jacksonville dominated in time of possession (21:08 to 8:52), yardage (203 to 104) and on third downs (6 of 8 to 1 of 4), but only led by 13-7 at intermission. Those stats weren't all that different in the second half -- the Jags finished with a 34:24-to-25:36 advantage in time of possession and 77-to-54 in plays on offense.

What was different was the connection between Rodgers and Adams, who was held without a catch in the first 30 minutes, then erupted with 9 grabs for 198 yards and a pair of TDs that pumped new life into his team and eventually led to the stunning victory.

"Tae [Adams] is a fantastic player," Rodgers said. After missing him on a play in the first half, Rodgers said that Adams came back to the huddle and said: "You don't trust me anymore? With like, a wry smile. So, I was using that line against him in the second half."

Whatever was said, the Rodgers-to-Adams connection in the second half was simply electric, especially in the fourth quarter.

After Jacksonville took a 22-17 lead early in the fourth quarter, the Jets drove to the Jags' 30-yard line before Anders Carlson pushed a 48-yard field goal wide right. The Jets' defense held.

Cue the magic.

Rodgers completed passes to Adams and TE Jeremy Ruckert. Then on second-and-10 from the Jets' 29, he sent a perfect, seam-splitting pass down the middle that Adams made a fingertip catch on and sprinted to the end zone to complete a 71-yard scoring play (the longest of his career). Rodgers then hit Adams for the 2-point conversion and a 25-22 lead with 3:34 left in the game.

"A good call by [play-caller] Todd [Downing]," Rodgers said. "We've run that for a long time in this style of offense where it's just a four vertical from kind of a different alignment, where we're at 21H personnel. So [rookie RB Isaiah] Davis is kind of backside of the slot. He comes in motion, and he becomes the guy in the flat. And then we have Tae [Adams] on a read route. I believe it was [TE] Kenny [Yeboah] running down the sideline, and [rookie RB] Braelon [Allen] was running the seam from the back loop, and then G [Garrett Wilson] backside on the out.

"So basically, that's kind of a pre-snap. If you have pressure you might pull it over there, we have a little line pull, left guard pull action trying to hold the mic. And a lot of covers today were kind of two-man-ish ... The protection, it was so good, I was able to kind of hold it just a little tick longer and peek outside to Kenny on the red line, to be able to throw and Tae made a great catch."

After Jacksonville drove for the tying field goal, the Jets got the ball back with 1:51 left.

Cure magic again.

Third-and-10 from the Jets' 30, 1:41 on the clock. Rodgers avoided defensive pressure and launched a pass that Adams skillfully brought in with an over-the-shoulder catch and kept both feet inbounds for a 23-yard gain to the Jags' 47. Then, the final magic trick ... third-and-5 at the Jags' 42 and Rodgers finds Adams alone on the visitor's sideline for 41 yards to the 1-yard line. On the next play, RB Breece Hall blasted into the end zone.

"That was a big play for sure," Rodgers said. "The biggest play, I think, was the over-shoulder-catch, because that kind of converted, that was a third-and-10, I believe."

The pair of TD receptions give Adams 101 for his NFL career; the second one was the 80th TD connection between Rodgers and Adams and puts them two behind Dan Marino and Mark Clayton. It also puts Rodgers 3 TD passes short of 500.
