New England PatriotsThe 411: All eyes are on Jimmy Garoppolo this summer. Garoppolo, who threw his first and second interceptions of training camp on Day 5, will start the Patriots' first four games of the regular season while Tom Brady serves his four-game suspension. The Boston Globe's Ben Volin had an excellent notes feature this week with a lead on Garoppolo’s experience at the 2014 East-West Shrine Game.
During that all-star week, former NFL head coach Jerry Glanville was impressed with the way Garoppolo ran his offensive attack.
"He reminds me of [Brett] Favre, mentally," Glanville said. "This guy is special. After Deflategate, everybody is so upset [Tom] Brady isn't going to play, and I said, 'Don't even worry about it, this other guy will come in and play and they'll still be winning, and you'll find out that Brady's backup is not normal.' This guy is so far from being normal."
Early Camp Standout: Surprise. TE Rob Gronkowski.
PUP: WRs Danny Amendola and Julian Edelman, RB Dion Lewis, TE Clay Harbor, Gs Tre Jackson and Shaq Mason, T Sebastian Vollmer
Buffalo BillsThe 411:While the Bills hosted free agent RB Reggie Bush Monday and they continue to talk with QB Tyrod Taylor about a possible contract extension, the guy who could take the Bills offense to another level is RB LeSean "Shady" McCoy. Limited to 895 yards on the ground last season in 12 games, McCoy changed up his routine and has plans for a successful Year 2 with the Bills.
"I went back to that old Rocky mentality. All the training in Arizona, going here, going there; I went back to my hometown, Harrisburg, put all the Bentleys and Rolls-Royces away and got to work. I'm probably 211(pounds) right now," he said. That's probably the lightest I've been since my second year in the league. I've got lots to prove this year, a lot of people doubting me, doubting this team, this offense. I'm big into answering a lot of doubters."
Early Camp Standout:CB* *Stephon Gilmore.
PUP:WRs Marcus Easley and Sammy Watkins, DE Shaq Lawson, DT Kyle Williams
Active/Non-Football Illness:DT Marcell Dareus, DB Jonathan Dowling, T Seantrel Henderson, RB Karlos Williams
Active/Non-Football List:LB Manny Lawson, WR Kolby Listenbee
Miami DolphinsThe 411: At 38, Adam Gase is the youngest head coach in the National Football League. Gase, who is hoping for sweltering conditions all summer, will keep the Dolphins out of their climate-controlled bubble during camp. The Miami Herald's Adam H. Beasley wrote about Gase’s No. 1 training camp goal.
"Probably just to see where our mental toughness is. What are we going to do when it gets tough? Because it's going to be tough in camp. There's not going to be any special treatment," Gase said.
"We're going to work, and we're going to make it hard and we're going to see — when it really gets tough — who's going to rise to the top and who's going to fall off."
Early Camp Standout(s): The Dolphins D-line.
PUP: CB Xavien Howard, RB Damien Williams & LB Zach Vigil
Active/Non-Football List: DE Dion Jordan
