*The Jets, with their second-round choice, 39th overall, in the NFL Draft tonight, selected safety Marcus Maye of Florida, who prides himself on his versatility in the secondary.

Maye (6'0", 210) arrives as a Jet one night after the Green & White selected their first safety of this draft, Jamal Adams, with the sixth pick of the first round.

"I feel great. I'm so happy right now," Maye told Eric Allen of newyorkjets.com shortly after his selection. "There's a bunch of emotions running through. It's been a dream come true, and just to be a part of the Jets family is definitely an honor."

Maye also noted that he and LSU's Adams, former SEC competitors, can do some damage now together in the Jets' deep middle.

"We played against each other for the past three years," Maye said. "He's one of those competitors that's going to come ready to play, so whenever you step on the field, you know you have to match that play. ... We're both competitors just trying to be the best safeties we can be, and just the fact that we're on the same team now means trouble."

Maye started in the Gators' first nine games of last season before suffering a season-ending broken arm against South Carolina. Before the injury, he had totaled one interception, six pass defenses and four forced fumbles.

For his four-season Florida career, the redshirt senior played in 40 games and totaled 5 INTs, 21 PDs, 6.5 tackles for loss, six forced fumbles and 205 total tackles. He was named All-SEC second team after both the 2015 and '16 seasons.

Due to the injury, Maye did not participate in this year's NFL Combine. But he said tonight that he went to the Combine for a medical check and "all the doctors cleared me."

"I've been working out, running and jumping and stuff like that," he said, "so I feel good."

NFLdraftscout.com reported that Maye ran a 4.47-second 40 at his pro day on March 28.

Maye is the Jets' ninth draft choice out of Florida all-time and the first in 25 years, or since center Cal Dixon was selected in the 1992 draft. Only one other Gator was chosen higher by the Jets in his draft than Maye — DB Steve Tannen, taken 20th overall in 1970.
