Jets head coach Rex Ryan isn't the only one thinks RB Bilal Powell and QB Geno Smith did outstanding work in Sunday's win over Buffalo. Both have been nominated for NFL weekly awards.
Powell is up to be named this week's FedEx Ground Player of the Week and Smith is in line for the Pepsi Next Rookie of the Week honor.
Powell ran for 149 yards on 27 carries and added 9 yards on two receptions. It was the first 100-yard rushing game and 150-yard scrimmage game of his three-year career, and he led a 182-yard rushing offense that vaulted the Jets to a sixth-place tie in rushing
yards per game, their highest ranking since the end of the 2010 season.
Powell is in the running for this award with DeMarco Murray of Dallas and DeAngelo Williams of Carolina. You can vote here for the FedEx Ground Player of the Week.
Smith triggered the Jets' 513-yard offense — their first 500-yard game since the 2000 season — and in the process threw for 331 yards on 16-of-29 passing to become the first rookie in franchise history with a 300-yard passing game. He also rushed 8 yards for the game's first score and his first pro TD. Smith's competition for the Pepsi Next honor are Cincinnati RB Giovani Bernard, Tennessee WR Justin Hunter, Detroit DE Ziggy Ansah and Cleveland LB Barkevious Mingo.
