Head coach Todd Bowles and the Jets have named Brant Boyer as the team's new special teams coordinator.
Boyer comes from Indianapolis, where he had been the Colts' assistant special teams coach from 2012 through this past season. He began his work in the NFL as a training camp intern, first with the Browns in 2009 and then with the Giants in 2010.
Boyer has assisted with the continued success of kicker Adam Vinatieri and punter Pat McAfee, who both were AP All-Pro first-team and Pro Bowl selections in 2014, and long snapper Matt Overton, who made the Pro Bowl in '13 a year after Boyer scouted him and brought him to the Colts for a tryout before his signing after the '12 draft.
In the past season the Colts were second in the NFL in gross punting average, fifth in net punting average, fourth in field goal percentage and third in opponents' kickoff return average.
Boyer compiled his coaching résumé after a distinguished playing career as a 10-year linebacker and special teams standout for Miami (1994), Jacksonville (1995-2000) and Cleveland (2001-03). He entered the NFL as the Dolphins' sixth-round pick (177th overall) in the 1994 draft and in his career played in 129 games and totaled 250 tackles, 13 sacks and six interceptions. He served as special teams captain for the Jaguars and Browns and led the Browns in ST tackles in '02 and '03.
Before the pros, Boyer starred at ILB as captain of the University of Arizona's "Desert Swarm" defense and enjoyed a superb senior season leading the Wildcats in tackles as they compiled their first 10-win season in 90 years and posted a 29-0 victory over Miami in the Fiesta Bowl on Jan. 1, 1994.
