The New York Jets have announced that they will honor former wide receiver Wayne Chrebet with a special halftime ceremony on Sunday, Sept. 23, when the Jets host the Miami Dolphins in the third game of the 2007 season. Wayne Chrebet Day is sponsored by Sprint.
"Wayne Chrebet was a one-of-a-kind player," Jets president Jay Cross said. "For 11 seasons, he represented this team with class and dignity. His skill was matched only by his big heart and his unflinching dedication to his team and the game of football. His legacy will forever inspire our players, coaches and fans. We are thrilled to celebrate his remarkable career with a special halftime ceremony."
Chrebet retired on June 2, 2006, second on the Jets' all-time list with 580 career receptions and third on the franchise's all-time list with 7,365 receiving yards, for an average of 12.7 yards per catch.
He played his entire career (1995-2005) in a Jets uniform. As a rookie free agent in 1995, he moved from last on the depth chart that season during training camp to opening-day starter.
Chrebet played in 152 career regular-season games (third all-time among Jets wide receivers), starting 105 of those games, and he caught 41 touchdown passes from nine different quarterbacks. In the postseason, he played in six games, making five starts, recording 19 catches for 269 yards for a 14.2 average and two scores.
