Two of the veteran influencers on the Jets' sky's-the-limit defense reported for training camp duty at the Atlantic Health Jets Training Center on Tuesday and can't wait to get to work during Wednesday's first practice of the summer.

"It's another year to get back out there and prove ourselves again," MLB and defensive captain C.J. Mosley said. "We're looking forward to it, hoping for great health this year, a couple of bounces here and there, and just get ready to roll."

"I'm super-excited, man," DL and two-time Pro Bowl pick Quinnen Williams said with his trademark enthusiasm. "We were excited in OTAs and now we get a chance to put it all in front of us and really fight for something, work for something toward our ultimate goal of being great and winning football games."

As the past two seasons have shown, great defense and inconsistent offense aren't guaranteed to get it done. But with the vibes on both sides of the ball being heard loud and clear this year, the Jets have the opportunity again to do some damage in the NFL and their defense has the chance to rise even higher than their top-five status of 2022 and '23.

But Mosley said that what he and his teammates expect from themselves for the coming campaign remains high as always.

"I feel our expectations will always stay the same," he said. "Injuries and everything we dealt with last year, you can't control those. But you can control your attitude, how you work every single day. And we've added some great additions through our draft class and some great players through free agency to our talent pool."

One of those great additions via trade is edge rusher Haason Reddick, who averaged 12.5 sacks a season his past four seasons as a Cardinal, Panther and Eagle. Reddick, who stayed out of the Jets' offseason workouts, didn't report Tuesday, but both Jets defensive opinion leaders felt the new vet's situation would be resolved soon enough.

"When you're dealing with contracts and things like that, they don't really affect you," Mosley said of the locker room's take on Reddick's absence. "When he gets here, we'll have our two cents to say. Whenever that works out, he'll get here and he'll be another great player to add to our defensive line."

Williams was equally confident, having squared away his own contract situation a little over a year ago.

"I try to stay out of all that," "Q" said, " but I know he's an amazing player, an amazing person. And I know this organization is amazing at getting these things done in a decent time. He's a phenomenal player, and when he steps on the field, he changes the aura. ... I'm just excited to have him on my side of the ball to help me out."

In the meantime, the Jets defenders will go about their summer business. They seek to be even better in their strengths — last season they ranked third in the NFL in yards allowed/game, first in yards allowed/play, second in net passing yards allowed/game and fourth in pass yards allowed/play — and to take quantum leaps in other areas, after allowing 20.9 points/game and finishing 25th in rush yards allowed/game and a good but not great eighth in total takeaways.

"I was watching a game this morning because I was bored, our game at Dallas last year," Williams said. "We didn't play at a high level, weren't consistent at a high level and the game got out of whack. Another game, the second half of the Washington game, didn't go as well as we wanted it to. The biggest thing for us is that we're very talented, very together, we have chemistry. But we've got to execute at a very high level, not just for the first half or the first quarter but for the full 60 minutes."

"We just want to keep playing dominant defense, whether it's less points, more fumbles, more interceptions. Whatever the goal is that we set for ourselves that week, we've got to accomplish," Mosley said with all the influence a team captain can muster on report day. "We've proven ourselves to be a great defense, and we've got some great backup players, too. We just have to keep growing, keep building our confidence, and not take any steps back."
