Following their 31-6 loss to the Cardinals on Sunday, Jets WR Davante Adams summed up the offensive's performance in a single word: "Frustrated."
"We have too many good players to go out there and have the drives that we did and to not score touchdowns," Adams said. "It is not our standard of football, and it is not my standard of football. I don't even really know what to say. It was a weird, weird day. We came out and did some good stuff, but we just weren't able to compete."
The Jets offense managed to sustain drives, matching or exceeding 10 plays and averaging 57 yards on 4 of 6 possessions, but struggled to convert on the plus side of the field.
Of the Jets' three red-zone trips, 1 resulted in points, a 25-yard field goal by K Spencer Shrader; 1 resulted in a turnover, a strip sack of QB Aaron Rodgers on fourth-and-goal; and another ended on downs. Going into Week 10, the Jets ranked 13th in red-zone-touchdown conversion rate (57.1%) and 12th over the previous three weeks (63.6%).
"We have to start executing at the right times," Adams said. "And what I mean by that, is going down and scoring. We didn't have very many possessions, especially in the first half, so it is about making the ones we do get count and scoring touchdowns.
"It's weird, because you look at the score and it was like you would think that we were just three-and-out, three-and-out, three-and-out, when that wasn't even the case. It was just a matter of not being able to capitalize and maximize the opportunities in the drives that we had."
Rodgers targeted Adams 13 times, 4 in the red zone, and the two connected 6 times for 31 yards. Early in the third quarter, the pair missed an opportunity to connect for a touchdown that would have cut the lead to two scores.
With the Jets trailing, 24-6, Rodgers tried to thread a pass to Adams in the back of the end zone. The throw was tipped by S Dadrion Taylor-Demerson, but Adams still managed to get two hands on it before the ball hit the turf.
"I got to do a better job and finish that play that I had and that opportunity in the end zone," Adams said. "Regardless of if the ball is tipped or whatever, which I'm not even so sure that it was, but it was really close. And it's one of those that you have to figure out regardless."
Adams' counterpart, WR Garrett Wilson, had 5 catches on 6 targets for 41 yards and agreed with Adams' assessment of their offensive performance.
"[Adams] was spot on," Wilson said. "Losing 31-6 is unacceptable. We go about things the right way and we have a team that can go out and play with anybody, but we just continue to not do it when it matters."
For the season, Wilson has 66 receptions, the most through 10 games in franchise history, for 704 yards, the most by a Jets receiver since Brandon Marshall in 2015 (800) and the 10th most all-time in franchise history.
The third-year receiver, coming off a two-touchdown performance against the Texans 10 days ago, thought the energy was good throughout the week leading up to the game, but added that it didn't translate to the field. He said the team will spend the next week searching for the fix before the Colts visit MetLife Stadium in Week 11 next Sunday.
"I don't think we went into the game with the wrong mentality," Wilson said. "I don't think we went about our practices or meetings wrong; I just think it is all about Sundays. I know I say that all the time, but when you go out there and play bad, it is frustrating."
