Shonn Greene grounded and pounded and burst his way not only to a career-best rushing game against the Indianapolis Colts on Sunday but also to a new honor in his career with the NFL's announcement this afternoon that Greene has been voted the FedEx Ground NFL Player of the Week.
Greene ran for 161 yards and three touchdowns on 32 carries. The yardage and carry total were both career marks and the three rushing TDs ties the franchise record that was achieved 11 times before, including once by Greene last year at Washington.
No. 23 outpaced his fellow finalists for the weekly Ground award, the Bills' C.J. Spiller and the Giants' Ahmad Bradshaw. And Greene shares the FedEx podium today with Packers QB Aaron Rodgers, who takes home this week's FedEx Air Player of the Week honor.
Fans voted for more than their favorite players. The weekly awards are also a win for local communities as FedEx is making a $2,000 donation in each of the winning players' names to the area offices of Junior Achievement in New York City and Green Bay. The funding is used to help U.S. small-business development, by educating the next generation of entrepreneurs on how to start and grow their own businesses.
It's not the first FedEx award won by the Jets. LaDainian Tomlinson was named Ground Player of the Week for his Week 4 game at Buffalo in 2010, and in the first year of the awards in 2004, Curtis Martin was the Week 1 winner as well as the FedEx Ground Player of the Year. And Brett Favre took the Air Player of the Week award for his Week 4 game against the Cardinals in 2008.
The New York Jets thank all the fans who voted for Greene and participated in this week's voting on NFL.com.
