How Hackenberg 'Grew' in Tuesday's Practice

Second-Year QB Tossed a Pair of Picks, Also Threw Two Touchdowns

Quarterback Christian Hackenberg threw his first interceptions in team drills in today's practice, but the turnovers didn't faze him.

"I think I started off slow," Hackenberg said. "But personally I think I was most proud about being able to come back and not let it affect me throughout the rest of practice. I think that's growth right there. It is what it is, you can't go back in time, but ultimately I think finishing strong, not just personally but as a team and an offense, I thought we finished better."

The 6'4", 228-pounder tossed a pair of touchdowns and showed off the arm as he completed a 75-yard yard deep ball to speedster Robby Anderson over the top of two defenders. The former second-round pick also delivered a scoring strike to tight end Austin Seferian-Jenkins later in practice.

Hackenberg has received more reps with the first-team offense the last couple of practices.

"I think it's valuable," Hackenberg said. "Ultimately [QBs coach] Jeremy Bates does that and the coaching staff decides who goes where. I just have to go out there and execute the play that's called to the best of my ability."

Through camp thus far, Josh McCown has taken the majority of reps with the first team. Even though an unofficial depth chart was released today with the Jets preseason opener looming, head coach Todd Bowles said he hasn't talked to his coaches regarding any positional pecking order.

"It's the second week of camp," Bowles said. "We're moving guys around and getting them different reps with different people. We got Mo, Leonard and Sheldon getting reps with the second-team D-line. It doesn't mean anything. You just get guys used to playing with different people, so when they get in the game, the timing isn't as off as it would be."
