The New York Jets have announced that Jeff Doroski of Bishop McGann-Mercy High School in Riverhead, N.Y., has been named this week's recipient of the New York Jets High School Coach of the Week Award. For his efforts, Doroski will receive $1,000 to benefit the school's football program, and he will be presented with a certificate from the New York Jets.
The award, in its 17th year, is given to coaches in the tristate area who serve the best interests of the game through the teaching of sound football fundamentals, the motivation of young players to achieve, and the promotion of youth football by way of dedication to their community, their school and their student-athletes.
Doroski is in his second season as the head coach of the Monarchs. He previously served as an assistant coach on Longwood High School's 2004 Long Island Conference 1 championship team. He was an all-league running back and defensive back during his playing days at Mercy and went on to play one season at Springfield College before concentrating on obtaining a degree in physical education from the institution. Doroski is also a physical education and health teacher at McGann-Mercy in addition to his coaching duties.
Last Saturday, the Monarchs defeated the Port Jefferson Royals, 21-7, to improve their record to 5-0 — the first time the school has started a season 5-0 since 1976. The Monarchs' next game will be at home on Friday, Oct. 12, against the Shoreham-Wading River Wildcats.
