In a game where the Jets put together three drives of 14-plus plays for the first time since the 2007 season, there was little to show for the effort -- other than an early Aaron Rodgers-to-Davante Adams TD pass and a field goal on the last play for the first half.
Sprinkled throughout the game were five attempts to convert on fourth down, only two of which were successful.
"I just want to stay aggressive," interim head coach Jeff Ulbrich said after Sunday's 19-9 loss to the Los Angeles Rams at frigid MetLife Stadium.
That aggressiveness paid an early dividend when the Jets converted on fourth-and-2 at the Rams' 20-yard line on a Rodgers' 8-yard toss to Adams. The Jets (4-11) scored 2 plays later on the 499th TD pass of Rodgers' NFL career to cap a 14-play, 99-yard drive that consumed 8:22 of clock time.
The Rams (9-6) took the ensuing kickoff 10 plays and 42 yards, and on a second-and-15 play at their 49-yard line, QB Matt Stafford overthrew WR Demarcus Robinson and S Tony Adams grabbed the interception at the Jets' 24. The theft was the Jets' third in the past two games. But four plays later, on fourth-and-1 at the Jets' 33, Ulbrich decided to go for the first down.
"For one, their offense was being very efficient at that point and our offense was being very efficient as well," Ulbrich said. "We were maintaining drives, moving the ball, we were converting third and fourth [downs] there for a while, so I just wanted to stay aggressive."
RB Breece Hall (14 carries/52 yards) was stopped for no gain. Two plays later the Rams tied the score, 6-6 (each team missed the extra point on their early TDs).
Later in the second quarter, the Jets converted on fourth down when Rodgers connected with Allen Lazard for 11 yards to the LA 23. The drive stalled and Anders Carlson converted a field-goal attempt as time expired for a 9-6 lead at the half.
The Jets held the ball for the final 6:22 of the first half and then took the second-half kickoff and put together a drive that consumed the first 9:45 of the third quarter, but ultimately resulted in another failure on fourth-and-4 from the LA 13 when a Rodgers pass intended for Adams in the end zone was incomplete.
"Well, if we lost some yards, I would have definitely taken the field goal," Ulbrich said. "But again, I want to stay aggressive on their side of the field, and we want to go for it. We felt good about the plan that we had called. Aaron felt good about it as well, so we thought that was the best decision at the time."
He added: "Hindsight is always 20/20. I really felt that we were so efficient and doing such a good job on third and fourth down that it was the right thing to do at that point. We had some momentum. I felt like their defense was on their heels a little bit and fatigued after a long drive. I thought we could finish the drive. I was looking for a touchdown."
Adams said: "That's Brick [Ulbrich], Aaron and the whole team's mindset, to do whatever we can to put up points. You live by it, you die by it sometimes, unfortunately. It's unfortunate, but I felt it was the right thing to do."
LA grabbed the opportunity and drove 66 yards on 13 plays, tying the game, 9-9, on a 38-yard field goal.
After a Rodgers fumble was recovered by the Rams, leading to the go-ahead score with 10:17 to play, the Jets tried again on fourth down. But Rodgers' pass intended for TE Tyler Conklin was incomplete. The Rams, who won their fourth straight game on the road, drove for another TD and a 19-9 lead.
"There's just little, little tweaks that are the difference between explosive gains or conversions and turnover on downs," Rodgers said.
