HC Looking to Establish Culture in Phase 1

While most of the attention in April is dedicated, externally, to the NFL Draft, Monday is the first day the players return for an offseason program. It'll be the first time new head coach Aaron Glenn can address his players in person and start to put his fingerprints on a new era of Jets football.

"I'm not here to talk about the Super Bowl, I'm not here to talk about playoffs or anything like that when the players first get in," Glenn said at the 2025 NFL Annual League Meeting in Palm Beach, FL. "To me, it's the process of actually making it to that point. The two things that I want to make sure that we do are, first and foremost, establish a culture that we've been talking about and then try to create building an environment and understanding what Phase 1 is really all about.

"We're trying to get bigger, faster, stronger and more explosive and that's the only thing I want the players worrying about at that point. We have a lot of time for scheme, we have a lot of time to talk about Super Bowls and playoffs, but right now building our culture and building our environment in that building is the most important thing right now."

Phase 1 is limited to strength, conditioning and meetings before on-field individual workouts begin in Phase 2. Phase 3 is Organized Team Activities (OTAs) when the club can conduct 7-on-7 and 11-on-11 drills with no live contact. The offseason program will end with a mandatory minicamp that will be held in June.

Glenn made it clear that even though he came through the coaching ranks on defense, he has a vision for his team and is ready to lead the Green & White in all three phases (offense, defense and special teams).

"About eight or nine years ago, I actually tried switching from the defensive side to the offensive side," Glenn said on "The Official Jets Podcast. " "Knowing I couldn't do that, I went and visited a lot of coaches on the offensive side and just talk offensive football. It prepared me to be a coach of the football team and not just a coach of the defense.

"That's one thing I want to be known for -- my offensive acumen is just as good as my defensive acumen and special teams also. I think all three parts are what you need to be able to win a game. I've done everything I could to be able to learn and get really good at understanding all three phases. I think that's what a head coach is supposed to do. No matter what when the game goes on, offense, defense, special teams, that's on me and I accept that responsibility."

Monday will also be the first time new general manager Darren Mougey can begin to meet most of the players on the roster in person. He's spoken to some players, especially the ones he re-signed in free agency. That includes LB Jamien Sherwood, DB Isaiah Oliver, LB Jamin Davis and RB-KR Kene Nwangwu.

"I've talked to a handful of the guys, but looking forward to when we start April 7 the more of them around to get those relationships going even more," Mougey said.
