The Jets (2-2) lost to the Broncos (2-2), 10-9, at MetLife Stadium in Week 4. Here three takeaways from Sunday's game.
Penalties
The Jets had too many self-inflicted wounds and were penalized 13 times including 5 false starts. Two of them occurred on consecutive plays backed up on their 1-yard line.
"I don't know, we do all the stuff that we did today," QB Aaron Rodgers said after the game. "We do it every day in practice, we change cadences every walkthrough, so I'm not sure. That was way out of character for us.
"We haven't had an issue. Morgan [Moses] had one false start, I believe, until this. [The cadence] has been a weapon. We use it every day in practice, we rarely have a false start and to have five today, it seems like an outlier."
The game was a defensive back and forth for the first half before both offenses came to life in the third quarter. Down by 7-6, Rodgers led an 11-play drive that resulted in a 40-yard field goal. The Green & White's momentum was halted when WR Allen Lazard was flagged for unsportsmanlike conduct after a 12-yard catch that put the Jets inside the red zone.
Backed up to the 33-yard line, the Jets made it to the 22 before settling for 3 points.
"Our operation had been good throughout camp and the first three weeks of the season," HC Robert Saleh said on Monday. "It wasn't good yesterday. There are things that as a coaching staff we can definitely make better for the players.
"I'm not going to get into detail on scheme, but from a pre-snap operation, things that we can do better just to clear their minds a little bit."
Pressure
The Jets started their second line combination of the season with RT Morgan Moses (knee) out and rookie Olu Fashanu starting in his place. The Broncos, coming off a 7-sack performance in Week 3, found success pressuring QB Aaron Rodgers.
The 40-year-old Rodgers was sacked 5 times and hit a total of 14 times.
"It would make you sick if he were a 20-year-old quarterback," HC Robert Saleh said. "You want your quarterback feeling comfy back there and he definitely wasn't comfortable. Give those guys credit. They're a legit top defense and they're going to give a lot of teams a lot of headaches. Last week they beat up on Tampa and Tampa just dropped 33 [points in Week 4]. It's a good defense, give them a lot of credit."
Denver entered Week 4 with the highest blitz percentage in the NFL at 50% and sacked Rodgers at least two times when sending pressure, including the first play from scrimmage. The Broncos also got to Rodgers on fourth-and-10 with 1:50 remaining in the game to force the turnover on downs as S P.J. Locke came off the left side and took down the QB.
"They did a great job mixing up their coverages," Saleh said. "They create a lot of 1-on-1s and they did a nice job. A couple of the sacks you can give credit to the back end and a couple you can credit to them winning 1-on-1s. It's a good defense."

Rush Defense
The Broncos entered Sunday's game No. 22 in the NFL in rushing yards per game (99.7) and ran for 126 yards against the Jets.
Denver QB Bo Nix led the team on the ground from Weeks 1-3, but RB Javonte Williams paced the Broncos Sunday with a season-high 77 yards on 16 carries (4.8 avg). Williams entered Sunday's game with 52 rushing yards.
The Broncos turned to the run more in the second half and ran the ball 21 times for 73 yards after 10 attempts through the first two quarters.
"I have to watch the tape to see what was going on, but my guess would be fatigue, just being on the field for a while," said CB D.J. Reed, who had 3 tackles, 1 tackle for loss and 2 pass defenses. "They started to get leaky yardage from just not driving our feet while tackling and the running backs falling forward. That's my guess, but I have to watch the film."
