Jets Defense Needs to Get 'Mind Right' Before Facing Titans in Week 2

LB C.J. Mosley: ‘We Have to Look at the Film and Get Ready for a Short Week’

The Jets' defense struggled to contain RB Jordan Mason and the 49ers run game, leading to a decisive, 32-19, victory for San Francisco on Monday night. With a short week ahead leading to a road matchup at the Titans on Sunday, captain C.J. Mosley and the unit plan to turn the page quickly.

"They did a really good job running the ball and getting the 4- or 5-yard chunks when they needed to," Mosley said. "Then that created the third-and-shorts and that is when it becomes really hard. At the end of the day, we have to look at the film and get ready for a short week. We have to get our mind right because it is all mental going forward."

The Jets started the game forcing consecutive three-and-outs. On San Francisco's third possession, which came after Breece Hall's rushing touchdown, All-Pro CB Sauce Gardner delivered a perfectly timed punch to knock a pass away from WR Brandon Aiyuk on second down to eventually force a field-goal attempt that was converted by K Jake Moody, cutting the Green & White's deficit, 7-6.

"They just played in the Super Bowl and obviously they aren't going to have a huge drop off, but we know we are capable of stopping a team like that," Gardner said. "We have just got to do whatever it takes and that starts by growing from the positives and finding out why we lost the wat we did."

After Hall scored a touchdown to give the Jets a 7-3 lead late in the first quarter, the Niners' run game found its rhythm. They split carries between Mason, making his first career start with All-Pro RB Christian McCaffrey ruled out (calf) 90 minutes prior to kickoff, and Pro Bowl WR Deebo Samuel.

The 49ers rushed for 180 yards and scored on eight straight possessions to end the game. They had great success on third down, converting 6 of 13.

"We have to be better, especially on third downs," Gardner said. "Third down and short, third down and medium, quite a few times we didn't execute when we could have and got off the field."

It was an uncharacteristic performance overall from the Green & White's defense. Last season, it allowed the third fewest yards per game (292.3) and second-fewest first downs per game (17.5) in the league. Monday night, the Niners picked up 402 total yards and 24 first downs.

"They ran the ball really well today and that is something we have to fix," All-Pro DT Quinnen Williams said. "We got a short week, so we got to look at the film and learn from it. We got the team and the coaching staff to be able to make a quick fix and we got the players to accept the responsibility."

The Jets defense had a few standout performances including DL Micheal Clemons had a sack and a tackle for loss. In addition, Williams, who traditionally rushes from the interior, took a few snaps from the edge. On the 49ers' first possession, he pushed RT Colton McKivitz into the lap of QB Brock Purdy, forcing him into an awkward throw that fell incomplete.

"I feel like I am going to be able to take a couple more chances and do a little bit more lining up there a couple times a game," Williams said. "Going into this year, it will help me get away from a couple of the double teams but obviously I got to keep working on it."

S Tony Adams, led the team with a career-high 12 tackles and recorded a sack and a pass defense, believes the defense will flip the script for Week 2.

"The standard for this defense as a whole is excellence and we didn't play to that standard," Adams said. "We are going into a short week and we don't have no other choice but to bounce back and play to that standard in Tennessee."
