The Jets' receiving corps will nearly be at full force for Week 1 as WR Mike Williams, recovering from an ACL injury, will play in the season opener at San Francisco.
"It's what I expected," Williams told reporters after Thursday's practice. "I was putting the work in this whole time to make myself available to perform this season. It's all paying off at the right time."
Williams was activated off the physically unable to perform list on Aug. 7 and did not take any reps in team periods throughout training camp. He's since worked his way into the fold and has already made an impact.
"He actually had a really nice day [Thursday]," head coach Robert Saleh said. "I think he had like 4-5 catches and well over 100 yards, but I thought he had a really nice day.
"We're going to be very smart with how we use him [Week 1], but he's going to be plenty available to make his mark felt."
Saleh has consistently said that Williams is on a similar recovery timeline to Breece Hall from last season, who was activated off PUP on Aug. 15 and played on a pitch count to start the season. Hall took 17 of the team's 54 offensive snaps (31%) against the Bills in Week 1.
"I'm ready for whatever," Williams said. "Whenever my number is called, I'll be ready. I'm preparing to play the whole game or whatever they need from me.
"I wouldn't go out there if I weren't able to be myself. I'm confident in going out there and doing what I do."
Williams has an impressive résumé as a downfield receiver. The 6-4, 218-pounder, drafted No. 7 overall in 2017, leads the NFL with 15.8 yards per reception (min. 250 catches). From 2018-23, 22.1% of Williams' targets came on deep passes, according to Next Gen Stats, which is the fifth-highest percentage among players with at least 250 snaps. His 20.4 yards per catch in 2019 led the league.
He hasn't put his receiving prowess on display yet for the Green & White, but he's impressed the coaching staff with his football IQ.
"The other day, put him in a walk-through because he hadn't done any walk-throughs with us," receivers coach Shawn Jefferson said in training camp. "I'm thinking that's my moment to grab him, right? Get him in his walk-through, hopefully he screws up. Great moment for me to coach him. He didn't miss a beat. He knew everything."
Williams' next box to check is a crash course in on-field chemistry with Aaron Rodgers.
"I'm going to continue to ask questions, see what spots he likes on the field to make my job easier and make his job easier," Williams said. "Continue to ask questions in practice, get reps in and it'll just come smooth."
As a bystander throughout most of training camp, the South Carolina native likes the potential of the Jets' offense.
"It's going to be crazy," he said. "Aaron is hitting on all cylinders right now. Everybody is making a lot of plays against the defense that we have, so I feel like when it comes to Sundays, it's going to make it a lot easier for everybody."
