Jets-Panthers Preseason Game Preview | Longtime Friends Set to Square Off in Game 2 of Summer Slate

Robert Saleh Doesn’t Announce Who Will Sit; Rookie Olu Fashanu Could Play Right Tackle

Change in the NFL happens fast and its perpetual, which is illuminated by Saturday's preseason game between the Jets and the Panthers.

Thirty-eight Jets (42% of the 90-man roster) who took snaps in last year's matchup between these teams are no longer on the roster. After Thursday's joint practice, it's still unclear how many starters, if any, HC Robert Saleh will sit. He rested 28 players in the team's preseason opener against the Commanders last Saturday.

"Back in the day when there were three or four preseason games you played a quarter, then you played a second quarter, then you brought your guys out for the third quarter," Saleh said. "That's not the case anymore. Now it's a matter of really looking yourself in the mirror as a coaching staff and are you just trying to check boxes to say, 'OK, I played my guys for a series,' or is it actually going to help us perform at our best in Week 1?

"Just going through that evaluation process, we've got another inter-squad scrimmage next week versus the Giants. We're getting a lot of reps, a lot of quality reps and just looking at the overall body of work throughout training camp whether or not our guys need that extra work, we'll make that decision when it comes to it."

If Saleh follows a similar course as in the opener, it's a safe bet a lot of younger players on the Green & White will see game action. Second-year players C Joe Tippmann (7 snaps) and DE Will McDonald (12) each played a couple series last week. WR Xavier Gipson, another second-year player, could make his debut Saturday (7 p.m. kickoff). He was held out of last week's game for what could have been precaution as he had recently returned to practice from a leg injury.

Rookie first-round draft pick T Olu Fashanu took 25 snaps, all at left tackle, which was the most on offense among the draft class. He's since started crosstraining at right tackle in practice and Saleh did not say which position the No. 11 overall pick out of Penn State will play in his second professional game.

"We'll talk about it after [Thursday] to see what we want to do depending on who plays and who doesn't during the game," he said. "We just want to give him an opportunity to play one position. I don't want him jumping around during the game."

Third-round pick Malachi Corley, who took 18 snaps on offense and 3 as a returner, is gearing up to take another step in his development and is eager to take on a different color jersey.

"Honestly, even in the run game, I didn't get too many reps to really get put my hands on guys and show off my physicality," Corley said of Thursday's practice. "That's what I look forward to doing every single day. This last game only got to play until halftime, so hopefully this game I get a lot more burn and really get to show off my physicality and really just play a full game."

Regardless of who suits up and for how long Saturday night in Charlotte, the game will be the first between longtime friends who are now head coaches. Saleh and Panthers HC Dave Canales, hired in January, were on the same Seahawks coaching staff from 2011-13 when Saleh was a defensive quality control coach and Canales the receivers coach.

"It's been awesome to watch," Saleh said of the first-year head coach's rise. "I've had a lot of conversations with him, when I got [the Jets] job. He's been ready for a while. It was great to see him get his opportunity last year with Tampa [as its OC]. You knew if he just got an opportunity he was going to take off, and he has."
