The Jets have placed tackle Breno Giacomini on Reserve/Physically Unable to Perform, their last transaction needed to reduce their roster to the NFL's 53-player limit by 4 p.m. today.
Giacomini (back), the Jets' starting right tackle for all 32 games the previous two seasons, had been on Active/PUP all during training camp. He will remain on Reserve/PUP for at least the first six games of the regular season.
This is the NFL's description of the rule governing Reserve/PUP players:
Beginning on the sixth calendar day prior to a club's seventh regular-season game (including any bye week) and continuing through the day after the conclusion of the 11th regular-season weekend, clubs are permitted to begin practicing players on Reserve/Physically Unable to Perform and Reserve/Non-Football Injury or Illness for a period not to exceed 21 days. Players may be activated during the 21-day practice period, or prior to 4 p.m. ET, on the day after the conclusion of the 21-day period, provided that no player may be activated to participate in a Week 6 game."
Prior to moving Giacomini to Reserve/PUP, the Jets had waived 16 players, waived/injured two players, and released two players. Along with Sheldon Richardson's one-game NFL suspension beginning at 4 p.m. today, the Jets are at 53 players.
