The Jets have signed quarterback John Wolford and have waived/injured wide receiver/kick returner Lucky Whitehead.
Wolford (6'1", 200) is an undrafted free agent rookie signalcaller out of Wake Forest. He was one of 44 tryout players who participated in the Jets' rookie minicamp in May.
He was a starter for four seasons for the Demon Deacons, beginning with his true freshman season in 2014. He led the ACC as a senior last year with 29 passing TDs and 8.5 yards/attempt. In his past two seasons he was a bowl-winning QB, leading Wake past Temple in the Military Bowl in '16 and past Texas A&M in the Belk Bowl last year.
For his Wake career, Wolford completed 761 of 1,275 passes (59.7%) for 8,794 yards, 59 touchdowns and 41 interceptions. He also rushed for 19 TDs, including 10 last season.
Whitehead played his first two NFL seasons with Dallas in 2015-16, then came to the Jets on waivers in July 2017. He was waived/injured last September, then was signed to the Jets' practice squad last November. This preseason he had three punt returns for 19 yards and one kickoff return for 20 yards, all in the Week 2 preseason game at Washington, but didn't practice this past week and was in street clothes for the Jets-Giants game Friday.
