Two weeks after Matt Forte announced his retirement, the Jets filled a void in the backfield with the free agent signing of Isaiah Crowell.
The 25-year-old Crowell was Cleveland's No. 1 back last season, totaling 853 yards on the ground while averaging 4.1 yards a carry. He also contributed in the passing game, hauling in 28 receptions for 182 yards.
"I feel like I can do some of everything with the ball," Crowell said. "I can catch the ball, I can run in between tackles and I can run outside. I can make people miss, I can run you over. I feel like I'm very versatile and that's how I like to be."
Crowell's best professional campaign came in 2016 as the 5'11", 225-pounder amassed 952 rush yards while averaging 4.8 yards a pop. The bruising back helped the Browns finish second in the NFL with a 4.89 rush average, their highest since 1966. He had a career-high seven rush scores and also chipped in with 319 yards on 40 receptions. His 85-yard scoring run against Baltimore was the second-longest running play in Browns history and the longest in the NFL in 2016.
Originally signing with Cleveland as an undrafted free agent on May 12, 2014, Crowell's 19 rush touchdowns were the third-most by a player in a his first three Browns seasons behind Hall of Famer Jim Brown (40) and Kevin Mack (22). In his first season, the Alabama State product tied for eighth in the NFL and finished second among rookies with eight rushing scores.
After playing one season at Georgia, Crowell finished fifth in Alabama State history in points scored (160) and sixth in rushing yards (1,963) after two seasons. Nicknamed "The Crow," the durable back joins a running backs room that includes Bilal Powell and Eli McGuire. He also will reunite with QB Josh McCown as the veteran passer, a Brown in 2015-16, agreed to terms with the Jets before free agency commenced.
"There were a few teams that wanted me, but I felt like this was probably going to be the best place for me," he said. "I knew players on this team and they told me about the locker room and how great it was playing here."
