The Jets (1-1) got their first win of the season and beat the Titans (0-2), 24-17, in Nashville in Week 2. Here three takeaways from the game.
Replacements Impress
CB Brandin Echols and LB Jamien Sherwood played well with an increased workload Sunday.
Echols started opposite All-Pro CB Sauce Gardner as D.J. Reed did not play because of a knee injury that popped up Friday. Echols, who played in 14 games last season, intercepted QB Will Levis on a deep pass intended for WR Treylon Burks as he ripped the ball away from the receiver. The Jets took over on their 27-yard line and drove 73 yards on 12 plays to tie the game, 7-7, on RB Braelon Allen's 12-yard receiving score.
"When I saw that [Reed] was hurt, I just thought you always have to prepare like you're a starter anywhere on this defense," said Echols. He added of his INT: "I was just playing ball, executing the play. Coach always talks about playing all the way to the ground, so that was the mentality I had at that point in time, making sure I played it all the way through and see what happens."
Sherwood was thrust into the lineup in the beginning of the second quarter when C.J. Mosley exited with a toe injury. Sherwood's 9 tackles co-led the team with Quincy Williams, and he added a pass defense, a tackle for loss and 2 special teams tackles.
"I thought he did a really nice job," HC Robert Saleh said. "He has tremendous command of the huddle. He's a great communicator pre snap and post snap. He has such good speed and tremendous length. He's gotten so much bigger and stronger. When you're converting from safety, it's a process. A process I think he's done a really nice job with."
Second-Half Steam
The Jets ran for 101 yards Sunday, 84 of which came in the second half. Breece Hall led the group with 62 yards on 14 carries (4.4 avg) after a slow start with 9 yards on 6 rushes (1.5 avg).
"The run game is always a second-half thing," Robert Saleh said. "It always will be, but in order to make it a second-half thing, you've got to be able to commit to it in the first half and also recognize when the pace of the game needs to change a little bit. I thought [offensive coordinator Nathaniel] Hackett and his staff did a really nice job communicating that after the third drive. We came out with a mindset to pick up the pace a little bit, pick up the ball a little bit, get to the ball out of Aaron's hands quicker. The results of that drive were pretty good."
The Wolf Howls
WR Irvin Charles did not take an offensive snap but made a significant impact on special teams to help the Jets win. Charles, who Robert Saleh refers to as a wolf on special teams, had two special teams tackles and blocked a punt.
He stopped Titans returner Jha'Quan Jackson for a big hit on the first play of the second quarter that went for no gain and pinned Tennessee on its 16-yard line. Later in the quarter he stopped Jackson for a 2-yard loss that set up the Titans on the 25. Charles' blocked punt in the third quarter led to a 33-yard field goal that put the Green & White up 17-10.
"He's ascending, he's learning who he is and learning his game," HC Robert Saleh said. "He's super confident in his ability, he's confident in the gameplan that he's been given from a special teams standpoint. He's our bell-cow. I said it [Sunday], he's a Pro Bowl special teamer. He makes everything go or us in that phase of the game."
