Jets-Panthers Joint Practice Report | After Slow Start in Carolina, Jets Bounce Back in Charlotte

Garrett Wilson Excels Again; Defense Has Multiple Skirmishes With Panthers Players

After hosting the Commanders for a rainy joint practice last week in Florham Park, the Jets took their show on the road Thursday under a scorching sun for a joint session with the Panthers in Charlotte, NC. Although both clubs had their moments in the practice, the Jets lamented a slow start to the workout that began at 9:30 a.m.

"It was a workday," said veteran LB C.J. Mosley, the heart of a group that had multiple scuffles with the Carolina offense. "The cons of being the guest and going to joint practices – we have to get ready a little quicker. It took us a little while to sort of get in the zone, but once we got warmed up it started to get a little bit competitive. It is fun to be out there going against another team but overall felt like it was a good day."

Garrett Wilson, who had an early TD along with a scoring grab late, continued to be one of the Jets' most consistent performers.

"I am not exactly sure why we started slow," Wilson said. "We are going to go back and talk about it. I know personally, I have got to dig deep and find that and be part of the reason we have energy as soon as we go out there. I have to be part of the reason we are ready to go, and today I felt like I was part of the sheep. That can't be the case, we have got to be ready to roll."

Offense
It was a mixed bag for the Jets against a frisky Panthers' outfit that amassed four takeaways in team drills. The Jets started clean with Breece Hall, operating behind all five projected starters on the offensive line, taking a pitch from Aaron Rodgers and finding room down the right sideline for a big gain. Then, after Rodgers got a free play due to a Panthers' defender jumping offside, he took advantage with a gorgeous toss to Garrett Wilson in the back of the end zone for a touchdown. Two plays later, Rodgers hit rookie Malachi Corley for a quick-hitter close to the goal line.

But some ominous foreshadowing ensued when Rodgers threw a bullet to Allen Lazard and the high pass was deflected and intercepted by safety Alex Cook. Later in a move-the-ball-team period, Wilson ran a filthy route to get free from a Panthers defender and Rodgers was on time with a perfect delivery to get the Jets in business. A couple of plays later, Rodgers, showing no ill effects from his Achilles tendon injury, rolled out and found Xavier Gipson for another chunk gainer. The Jets appeared to end the drive when rookie Braelon Allen cut back along the left side past the goal line for a score, but he was ruled down at the 2. Soon after, the normally sure-handed Hall lost a fumble inside the 5 that the Panthers gobbled up.

On the ensuing play, Rodgers tried to get the rock to Wilson in the corner of the end zone but LB Trevin Wallace easily stepped in and intercepted a rare forced pass.

Rodgers and Wilson rebounded late, drawing a long pass interference penalty on a sky ball when an open Wilson was hauled down by CB D'Shawn Jamison. Then the two ended their practice on a high note, culminating their final possession with a short score in the corner of the end zone.

"It is always good to have someone else across from you," Wilson told reporters. "Competed today with a good team, they have a good cornerback room so for our receiver room it was a good day and a good experience for us to get out and see how we are stacking up. We started slow, which can't happen, but it is going to happen, and we found a way to bounce back and finish strong."

Practice ended when Tyrod Taylor, leading the second team, was intercepted by DB Demani Richardson on a misfire over the middle.

Defense
Moments before practice started, Jets HC Robert Saleh told reporters that star defensive tackle Quinnen Williams would not participate in the joint session.

"We're not going to have Quinnen up today," Saleh said. "He's dealing with a sore shoulder, so we didn't feel like it was necessary to get him rolling. We're not concerned. If this was a game week, we'd be rolling, but no concern."

In the first team period, Panthers QB Bryce Young completed his first two passes in the red zone against the Jets' defense. In the second drill, Young connected with WR Terrace Marshall for a touchdown over CB D.J. Reed. Marshall proceeded to throw the ball at Reed's feet as a celebration, which was flagged by the refs and led to a scuffle between the teams.

As the second and third team periods got underway, the Jets defense made some splash plays.

Second-year CB Jarrick Bernard-Converse had a nice pass defense against QB Jack Plummer, DTs Tanzel Smart and Javon Kinlaw had would-be sacks of Young, and S Chuck Clark had a big hit on RB Chuba Hubbard which he was slow to get up from.

"Practices are cool when you're at home, but when you're away, you have to adjust to certain things, and you don't get the schedule that you would when you're getting ready for practice," Mosley said. "I try not to make a big deal about it because I am at the point where I am not even playing in preseason games, so theses joint practices are like my gamedays."

Jetcetera
Rookie T Olu Fashanu continued his cross-training on the right side and had a good day working mostly with the second team. His work included a seal that set up fellow rookie – RB Isaiah Davis – for a scoring run that covered more than 20 yards. … WR Lance McCutcheon, a second-year player from Montana State, turned in his most productive day of camp. … With WR Garrett Wilson seemingly everywhere on the field, he got space over the middle with a Panthers LB trailing. QB Aaron Rodgers found the third-year wideout for a long gain.

The Jets will have a walk-through on Friday before they conclude their Carolina trip with Saturday's game against the Panthers. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. "We've got another inter-squad scrimmage next week versus the Giants," HC Robert Saleh said. "We're getting a lot of reps, a lot of quality reps, and just looking at the overall body of work throughout training camp whether or not our guys need that extra work – we'll make that decision when it comes to it."
