The Jets' aim Sunday is to chill the visiting Los Angeles Rams, in more ways than one.
The Green & White, coming off last week's 32-25 victory at Jacksonville, sit at 4-10 and would like nothing better at MetLife Stadium Sunday than to put a temporary freeze on the Rams' playoff plans. LA stands at 8-6 and at the moment has the tiebreaker over the Seahawks for first place in the tightly packed NFC West.
And one way for the Jets to frost the Rams' windows is to welcome the warm West Coast team to their Meadowlands meat locker for more than three hours of preparation and competition this afternoon. A cold wave has arrived in the Northeast with the forecast calling for a temperature around 24 degrees and a wind chill of 11 at the opening kickoff shortly after 1 p.m.
The cold along with winds of 15 mph and gusting higher will bring a weather factor to the luck and skill that the Jets and Rams plan to employ against each other in this game.
The Jets will have to get the job done without one of their big names in the front four. Quinnen Williams, who didn't practice all week due to a hamstring injury, has been placed on the inactive list for this game. Williams' streaks of 34 consecutive games started and played since his last deactivation in 2022 vs. Detroit come to an end.
Which QBs will be affected more? The Jets' Aaron Rodgers grew up and went to college in California but got used to wintry mixes in his 18 seasons with Green Bay. Matthew Stafford spent his formative years in the warmer environs of Florida, Georgia and Texas before spending the past four seasons as the Rams starter. Did his decade-plus in Detroit get him accustomed to the elements he'll play in Sunday? Not likely since he played his home games indoors at Ford Field.
See the Jets arrive at MetLife Stadium ahead of their matchup against Los Angeles.
Then there is the Rodgers-Stafford rivalry, honed from 2009-20, when Stafford was a Lion, Rodgers a Packer and the two usually met twice a year in their intradivision North rivalry. Rodgers holds a 14-4 edge on Stafford and 13-4 in their NFC North years, and Rodgers also has a 6-1 career mark and a 107.6 passer rating against the Rams.
But that's all ancient history. Both QBs have talented skill players — WRs Garrett Wilson and Davante Adams and RB Breece Hall for the Jets, WRs Cooper Kupp and Puka Nacua and 1,000-yard rusher Kyren Williams for the Rams. Both QBs are on hot streaks — Stafford has 10 TD passes and no turnovers in his last five starts, Rodgers has 13 TDs and 2 turnovers (1 INT, 1 strip) in his last seven starts.
And both QBs might have found holes in the opposing defenses to exploit, if not for the weather contributing to the equation. The Jets' numbers and rankings on D are better than the Rams, and CB Sauce Gardner is coming off his best two games of the season, including last week's first interception in two years, and is rejoined on the outside by D.J. Reed, returning to action after sitting out the Jaguars with a groin injury.
Yet LA is the hotter team record-wise with seven wins in their last nine games and four consecutive wins on the road coming into the teeth of the Meadowlands winter winds. May the more adaptable team prevail and then head into its last two games of the 2024 regular season on a cold roll.
