Shortly after he was drafted by the Jets on April 29, 2022, Garrett Wilson watched a powerful video message that his dad, Kenny Wilson, read to him on camera. Amongst the advice Kenny delivered was, "Seek greatness, which is your destiny, not wealth. If you are great, wealth will come."
"It's a mindset thing," Garrett Wilson said this week. … "For me, it was always just finding a way to be the best at your craft. It has always been, how can I compete? Whatever it was in -- football, basketball -- how can I be the best at it? The wealth will come. If you're doing what you love, doing it at a high level, then that stuff will take care of itself."
On Thursday, he put pen to paper on a multi-year contract extension and solidified his future with a team and staff that share his vision for greatness.
"It was about working with like-minded people," Wilson said. "It took me one conversation with [HC Aaron Glenn] and [GM Darren Mougey] to realize these dudes aren't messing around. … I've got an opportunity to go and prove who I am, show who I am and just meet them. Meet the people I want to work with and build something special with."
The first three seasons of Wilson's career were filled with special moments. After being selected No. 10 in the 2022 NFL Draft, he put together a dominant rookie campaign -- totaling 83 receptions, 1,103 yards and 4 touchdowns en route to Associated Press NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year honors.
From the moment he stepped on the field in green and white, Wilson has been the definition of consistency. He became just the fifth player in NFL history to surpass 1,000 receiving yards and 80 catches in each of his first three seasons, and just the second Jet to do so in three consecutive seasons (George Sauer). He has played at an elite level despite catching passes from seven different quarterbacks during his first three NFL seasons.
"Striving for greatness, no matter what your circumstances are," Wilson said of his mindset. "Finding a way to do your job and doing it to the best of your ability."
In 2024, Wilson recorded career highs in receptions (101), receiving yards (1,104) and touchdowns (7). He extended his pass-catching streak to 51 games. Even coming off his most productive season to date, his sights are set higher.
"Do I think I left a lot of plays out there these last three previous seasons? I have," he said. "Honestly, that's the part that gets me the most excited, is that I still have a lot of plays left to go make to go prove myself -- to my teammates and to this league."
He added: "You can't get complacent. You can't be comfortable with what you just did. You can't rest on your laurels ever."
This mindset has earned Wilson the respect of several elite players around the league, including 2024 AP Defensive Player of the Year Pat Surtain II, who has lined up opposite Wilson on several occasions. Surtain recently joined Johnny Manziel on the Glory Daze podcast and described Wilson as a "polished receiver" who is elusive and "can catch anything."
"To hear him say something like that is special because I feel the same way about him," Wilson said. … "He's one of the best in the league for a reason. So, for him to say that, it's awesome."
Even more important to Wilson than individual recognition is the overall success of the team. As the Jets take the field for training camp next week, Wilson's focus will be on taking the next step as a group in 2025.
"Playing meaningful football in December and January," Wilson said of his ultimate goal. "I think the rest of the stuff -- personal goals that me and my teammates may have -- will come with team success."
Now entering his fourth season with a new contract, Wilson is prepared to help lead the charge.
"The people here believe in me and they want me around for what we're about to do," he said. "I believe it's going to be special."
