After breaking his hand in the third quarter of the Jets' 23-0 loss to the Broncos, quarterback Josh McCown held back tears as he addressed the media following the game.
"I'll do whatever I can to get ready to go and we'll see where that leaves us," McCown said. "We still have some more tests and things we can do and look at. My heart is with these guys, I want to finish with these guys. If I can be out there, I'd love to be out there."
The gutsy 38-year-old also suffered a hip pointer in the second quarter as he was sandwiched by Broncos safety Jamal Carter and cornerback Aqib Talib on an 8-yard scramble. Third-year signal caller Bryce Petty entered the game for two plays, but Petty's number was called again in the third quarter after outside linebacker Shane Ray hit McCown on a pass completion to running back Matt Forte.
"I looked to the right, reset, came back to Matt and when I threw it, I got hit and it kind of just rolled up," McCown said regarding his hand. "He (Ray) kind of rolled over me and either a knee or a foot or something caught my hand and it bent funny. I knew when it happened that it wasn't right."
McCown doesn't know if his ailment will keep him out of the starting lineup, but it was clear his desire to suit up in the final three games of the season.
"It's been the best because of the guys," McCown said of his 15th NFL season. "Not numbers. It's been the best because of the group of men in the locker room. I'm just proud to be a part of it, so I'm thankful they let me be a part of this team. We'll see what happens. If I can finish, I'd love to finish. We'll see what the tests say."
