Jets interim head coach Jeff Ulbrich told reporters Friday that RB Breece Hall, who has been limited in practice this week (knee), is trending to play when the Jets host the Seahawks at MetLife Stadium Sunday.
"I tweaked my knee in the second quarter of the Colts game and played through it," Hall said. "I rehabbed last week and still felt sore, so they let me have a few rest days and then I attacked it [Friday] and felt good."
Ulbrich is hopeful team captain and linebacker C.J. Mosley, who was full participant in Wednesday's (walk-through) and Thursday's practice, but limited Friday, will play. Ulbrich, however, said it's not a guarantee Mosley will return to the lineup for the first time since Week 7. The Mike linebacker has 17 tackles in 4 games (3 starts) this season.
"C.J. is such a tough guy and he feels such an obligation to his teammates to be out there to help them," Ulbrich said. "He's going to fight to play no matter what and it comes down to him being really honest with us regarding how it feels and us, at times, protecting him if we don't think it's the right thing to do."
The Green & White will also be without LT Tyron Smith (neck) for the second straight week and rookie LT Olu Fashanu will start in his place. In Week 11, Fashanu played 52 snaps and allowed 1 sack and 3 pressures, according to Pro Football Focus.
Talented WR Trio in the Pacific Northwest
The Seahawks have one of the best receiving corps in the NFL in second-year wideout Jaxon Smith-Njigba, two-time Pro Bowler D.K. Metcalf and All-Pro Tyler Lockett.
Smith-Njigba, drafted No. 20 in 2023, ranks No. 8 in the NFL in receptions (66) and yards (755) and has 367 receiving yards since Week 9, which is tied for the second most over a span that includes a Week 10 bye.
"For one, they're featuring him from a schematic standpoint," IHC Jeff Ulbrich said. "They're really doctoring up some plays for him when he gets the ball in his hands. He's a problem. He's a tough runner with the ball in his hands. He feels like a running back at times the way he breaks tackles, the way he moves, the way he sets guys up."
Jets DB Isaiah Oliver, who played twice against the Seahawks last season with the 49ers, sees a more confident player than last season.
"The way he's running his routes, the way he's attacking the ball, you could tell he's just expecting himself to make those plays all the time," Oliver said. "Whereas last year, at least when we played them, it didn't necessarily feel like that all the time."
Metcalf (6-4, 235), who did not practice Wednesday or Thursday because of a knee injury, is a matchup nightmare for secondaries.
"He's probably the biggest receiver in the NFL, probably top-three fastest [he ran a 4.33 40-yard dash at the 2019 NFL Combine]," Oliver said. "You just have to come ready to play when you're going against him."
While the receivers garner most of the attention, Ulbrich said TE Noah Fant, whose missed the last three games with a groin injury, is "the element people don't talk about enough" regarding Seattle's pass attack.
"I know he hasn't been in there as much as they would have liked, but he's a matchup problem because you get a linebacker or safety on him and you got a real receiving threat on a [defender] that's maybe not necessarily accustomed to taking on a guy like that," he said.
Oliver added: "He has a feel for finding soft spots in zone [coverage]. He's not the fastest guy ever, but he's still able to create separation. He uses his body well and he's got really good hands."
Full Circle for Ulbrich
Sunday's matchup with Seattle will be a reunion of sorts for interim HC Jeff Ulbrich. Ulbrich got his start in coaching with the Seahawks as an assistant special teams coordinator for two seasons (2010-11) under former HC Pete Carroll, who agreed to leave the club at the end of last season.
Ulbrich, a 10-year veteran, retired from the NFL in December 2009 and met Carroll one month later at the Senior Bowl in Mobile, AL. Ulbrich exchanged contact info with Carroll and received a phone call a week later with a job offer.
"Carroll has been a great mentor to me in a lot of ways," Ulbrich said. "That team and those guys out there really gave me my first start and my first opportunity so I will always be thankful. … Their DC Aden Durde is one of my best friends on this Earth so it'll be good to see him."
