The New York Jets have been awarded running back Jeremy Stewart off waivers from Philadelphia and have waived running back John Griffin. The announcements were made by general manager Mike Tannenbaum.
Stewart (6'1", 218) signed with Philadelphia as an undrafted free agent on May 14. and participated in training camp with the Eagles until he was waived Tuesday. In five years at Stanford, Stewart played in 47 games, rushing for 920 yards and 14 touchdowns on 209 carries. He also had 18 receptions for 123 yards. As a fifth-year senior last season, he ran for 257 yards and nine touchdowns on 55 attempts.
Griffin (5'10", 208) joined the Jets after signing a reserve/future contract on Jan. 3. He entered the NFL with Cincinnati on July 28, 2011, as an undrafted free agent and was released by the Bengals following the preseason on Sept. 3. During his senior year at Massachusetts, Griffin posted 843 rushing yards and five touchdowns on 168 carries.
