Rex Ryan left no doubt about some of the players that stood out to him during Friday's 26-17 loss to the Lions in Detroit, mostly in the second half: S Jaiquawn Jarrett and WR Ben Obomanu.
"We'll put him out there with the ones next week," Ryan said of Jarrett. "You talk about playing like a Jet, that guy was in there and he did a tremendous job of hitting, communicating. I really liked the way he stepped up."
Jarrett finished with five tackles, second on the night for the Jets behind S Josh Bush's six tackles, plus a special teams assist. He also applied a quarterback hit and was in for 61 plays, the most by any player in the game, 50 coming on defense and 11 on teams.
Obomanu led the Green & White with four receptions, all but one in the second half, and a game-leading 59 receiving yards in helping QB Greg McElroy move the second offense to a pair of third-quarter scores.
Ryan also left no doubt about where he thought was the Jets' biggest issue in Friday's 26-17 loss to the Lions.
"Obviously, we've got to do a heck of a lot of improving. I think the biggest factor in the game was 11 penalties," the Jets head coach said. "When you keep putting yourself in first-and-20's, behind the sticks, that makes it extremely difficult."
"We didn't play the type of ball that we know we can play," T D'Brickashaw Ferguson said. "We've got to make sure that we continue to focus on the small details and improve our game next week."
The Jets actually were hit with 13 yellow flags, with only 11 of them being marked off for 85 yards. They led to three first-and-20's plus a second-and-16 and a second-and-29. Rookie T Oday Aboushi struggled with a hold, a false start and an illegal use of hands (declined) and yielded the strip sack of McElroy to rookie DE Devin Taylor. Two penalties each were assessed against G Willie Colon and LBs Antwan Barnes and Ricky Sapp.
Kellen Back in the Swing
TE Kellen Winslow played in his first game in 11 months and looked smooth with a pair of catches for 30 yards, with the big play a 24-yard catch-and-run from Mark Sanchez to start the 80-yard TD drive in the first quarter.
"I just got open and did my job," Winslow said. "Mark put it right on the money and I broke a tackle. I should've broken the other tackle, too."
Yardage Highs and Lows
The Jets totaled 317 gross passing yards at Detroit, the first time they were over 300 yards in a preseason game since throwing for 306 vs. New Orleans and 318 at Green Bay in the first two games of the 2000 preseason.
On the other hand, their 37 rushing yards for the night against the Lions were their lowest since they rushed for 26 yards in their 1982 game against the Giants.
Even-Steven for Kickers
Not much separation was evident in the Jets' two kicking competitions.
Nick Folk nailed a 51-yard field goal — the third time he's hit a 50-yarder in the last three preseasons — plus an extra point, and had two kickoff touchbacks (one kicked from the 40). Billy Cundiff had a PAT and two touchbacks.
In the punting area, it was also even. Robert Malone and Ryan Quigley each had three punts, one inside-the-20 and one touchback. Malone had a 50.3-yard gross and 40.7 net, Quigley a 47.3 gross and 39.7 net.
