What Did Jets HC Robert Saleh Say About Roster Cuts?

WR Mike Williams Takes Team Reps for First Time; Path Remains for Pass Rusher Haason Reddick to Play vs. 49ers

Some of the hay is in the barn for the Jets' roster decisions, but some still loom for GM Joe Douglas, HC Robert Saleh and the team's brass.

"We've made some [cuts]," Saleh said. "There are still some that need to get done."

The Jets held practice mid-morning on Tuesday with roughly 65 players before the NFL's 4 p.m. deadline when all rosters most be trimmed from 90 to 53. While the roster will continue to change throughout the season, the Green & White may juggle the roster over the next 24 hours based on potential injury designations.

On cuts day last year, the Green & White released P Thomas Morstead and FB Nick Bawden, who were not subject to waivers because of their NFL experience and could not be claimed by another team. Douglas re-signed them the following day when T Carter Warren and TE Kenny Yeboah were placed on injured reserve.

Saleh said the team is evaluating which, if any, players will be placed on IR, which would knock them out a minimum of four weeks. Rookie QB Jordan Travis, however, will remain on the non-football injury list as he continues to rehab his broken leg sustained last November while playing for Florida State.

"His rehab is going to be a little longer than we anticipated, but he's in a great place," Saleh said. "He's in every meeting, he goes to all the walkthroughs. Hopefully it's something we can revisit later in the year."

The Jets are fewer than two weeks away from opening their season at San Francisco on Monday Night Football, so they're balancing incorporating their gameplan in practice and continuing to work on their playbook as the dust starts to settle with the roster.

While cuts remain in focus Tuesday, the Jets' offense received reinforcements as WR Mike Williams took team reps for the first time since he was activated off the physically unable to perform list on Aug. 7.

As Week 1 approaches, the player holdouts for both teams will shift in focus.

Saleh said there's a path for Pro Bowl pass rusher Haason Reddick, who missed all of training camp, to play in the opener if he reports.

"I'm assuming he's in phenomenal shape," he said. "He's a veteran, he knows what he needs to get ready. He's had success in multiple buildings in multiple schemes with multiple coaching staffs, so he's going to know what he needs to do to be ready for Week 1, so he still has plenty of time."

The 49ers' All-Pro Trent Williams, like Reddick, has not reported to camp while WR Brandon Aiyuk has held in, which means he's been around the team despite not taking the field and has not been subject to any fines. Saleh is approaching the game with the mindset that Williams and Aiyuk will play.

"I fully expect Trent Williams to walk on the field and still be his All-Pro self with a newly minted contract and Aiyuk, I'm sure he'll be there," he said. "You keep kind of a side eye [on that], but right now it's all tunnel vision towards them and only them. With or without them, they're still a championship roster and they've got some dudes all over their roster. It's going to be a fun game and going to be a great challenge."
