Transcripts of interviews with Jets players following Sunday's afternoon training camp practice:
LB ERIC BARTON
On changing up his style of play but still doing it correctly …
That's what you have to do to be successful. There's always more than one way to do things. You have to switch up your style and do different things, and it's working for Jonathan [Vilma] and myself.
On his strength and doing what he has to do on defense …
Bryan Cox has helped me out a lot. He played the same defense. He's told me a couple of things, what to look for, some things to expect, certain fronts, certain offenses, things like that that let you step ahead.
On communicating with the defense …
I've always been like that. I think me and Jon try to make it a point. We can see things that the defense can't see or the safeties can't see or the corners can't see, because we're right there and we can see it all, and just telling them what to expect, and what assignments come up. Just anticipating calls, stuff like that.
On if there have been any big changes …
No, not too many. It's the second year of the program and it's pretty much the same thing we've done in the past. It's been a lot of hard work.
On being as a good a fit in the 3-4 as he was in the 4-3 …
Yeah, if I keep working on it. I just have to get better every day and every practice, come out here, and get better. I think it's not just for me, but the whole team is getting better, playing better as a unit. Our fits are better this year than they were last year. You've just got to keep working if you want to be the team we want to be.
OL PETE KENDALL
On taking snaps at center during practice …
I thought the organization had already decided how well I play center.
On being told about playing at center …
They told me when I came over this morning.
On whether playing center means he is in the Jets' long-term plans …
I have no idea what their plans are. It's just as likely they want to look at somebody else someplace else as far as I'm concerned. I'm sure they'll tell you when they're good and ready what their plans are. You'll probably know as soon as I do.
On the message received from playing center …
I'm not quite sure how to look at it right now. There's a lot of different ways to look at it. I'm undecided at this point.
On accepting that he may stay with the team for the season …
We'll see how it goes. There's a long time between now and then, I guess.
RB LEON WASHINGTON
On being labeled a change-of-pace back …
I don't worry about that. I'm going to go out and do what I need to do to give my team a great chance to win. If that's carrying the ball 100 times, then I'll carry the ball 100 times. I just want to go out there and do what I need to do to give us the best chance to win.
On handling 15 to 20 snaps a game …
I'm going to do what I need to do to give my team the best chance to win.
On his camp …
I'm having a pretty good camp. You're just working through some kinks. Obviously, you can't really make mistakes so you try to correct them. Hopefully, by the time you get to live ball in the regular season, you don't make those same mistakes. It's going pretty good.
On his off-season …
Just spending time with my son; trying to get to know my son. He's getting older, so I try to get to know him and spend more time with him. Last year, my first year, I didn't get a lot of chances to spend time with him.
On showing his abilities during the Atlanta game …
That's all of our goals and all of our options as any player on the New York Jets. Like I said before, I'm going to go out there and I'm going to do what I need to do to give us the best chance to win.
