Jets training camp practice will go on today, just not at the time it was originally scheduled.
Head coach Rex Ryan told reporters at his news conference this afternoon that because heavy rain and lightning canceled the 10 a.m. start to practice, the Jets will have a shorter but still full-pads practice in Cortland Stadium at 3:30 p.m. today that will be open to the public.
"We'll be on the turf here at 3:30 so we'll get our practice in. We'll warm up, and we'll basically get right to the team aspect," Ryan said. "We won't do the individual drills but we'll get right to the team drills — 9-on-7, 'special cat,' 7-on-7 and team — so that will be good."
Thunderstorm cells rolled over central New York right before the start of practice, first forcing the suspension and then the cancellation of the morning session.
"You want to have some practices in the elements," Ryan said, hearkening back to the 2010 SUNY Cortland practice that featured the first live goal-line drills of camp in a steady rain. "But lightning obviously is not one of those elements we're looking to practice in." Instead, the players went to Lusk Field House not far from the football fields on campus to go through the walkthrough part of their schedule, which normally comes in the evening. And now the storms have departed, the sun is out, and the pad-popping portion of the day is just ahead.
