Throughout the offseason, NewYorkJets.com reporters Eric Allen, Ethan Greenberg, Randy Lange, Caroline Hendershot and John Pullano will give their responses to a series of questions regarding this year's Jets.
Today's question: What has stood out early in Jets training camp?
EA: The lede is Aaron Rodgers. He's been as good or better than advertised. The Achilles injury that kept him out of the lineup last season sans four plays feels like a distant memory. He's a player-coach who just happens to be one of the best throwers of the football with unmatched intelligence and experience. It's not a surprise that the offense is so much further along than a year ago. Rodgers is a maestro who protects the football and is lethal in the red zone. It's encouraging that the starting line got a practice in with each other but that's just a start and continuity up front will be important. I like the depth at running back and that could pay dividends late when you want Breece Hall fresh in December and January. The game doesn't seem too big for Braelon Allen and Isiah Davis. The Jets have a solid tight end group and Rodgers makes everybody live no matter what the progression. Garrett Wilson is filthy, and it's not hyperbole when Rodgers says No. 5 has the potential to be the best receiver in the league. I like what we've seen early from Allen Lazard and Malachi Corley is getting valuable reps. The Jets are working without two of their top three wideouts in Mike Williams (PUP – knee) and Xavier Gipson (leg). But Rodgers is the story and he gives the Jets something that has been missing for a long time.
EG: How far along the offense is compared to this time last year. Led by Aaron Rodgers, the unit is operating at a difference pace. It's quicker, smoother and more successful than last training camp. Garrett Wilson hasn't had a bad practice. Allen Lazard has had a resurgence. Breece Hall has been receiving a lot of attention in the pass game and Rodgers hasn't missed a beat coming off his Achilles tendon tear four snaps into last season. Robert Saleh said earlier in camp the vibe around the team feels calmer entering the 2024 season and the players seem like they're on a mission. There's been healthy competition and you can sense the defense is still flying around at a top-five level, but the next test for the offense comes this week when they line up against the Commanders defense in the Thursday's joint practice.

CH: Wide receivers Allen Lazard and Garrett Wilson. Lazard has consistently been making plays with Aaron Rodgers and seems like he has found his groove again. He told reporters earlier in training camp his main focus this offseason was "just to improve, get better. Re-establish the value that I bring to this team, not just on the field, but in the locker room and in the community. Just being able to put my best foot forward going into this season." I think he has entered this season with a new mindset and it's showing with his early success on the field. Wilson has been impressive on the field, too. Rodgers and Wilson are in constant communication and continue to make changes to better their connection. Wilson said "I feel like we have a different connection this year than we had kind of feeling each other out last year, and how we go about things, and obviously we're very complimentary of each other". I am excited to see how both these WRs continue to develop their connections with Rodgers as training camp continues and the regular season gets underway.
JP: The depth of the Jets offensive line. Friday's training camp practice marked the first time the Green & White's full starting O-line was able to practice together this year after RT Morgan Moses was cleared to return to team practices from a torn pectoral he sustained last season with Baltimore. Even though it was a practice without pads, the unit of Moses, RG Alijah Vera-Tucker, C Joe Tippmann, LG John Simpson and LT Tyron Smith held up well. In the team's scrimmage Saturday, Moses and Smith did not participate and AVT was limited. Rookie LT Olu Fashanu, second-year T Carter Warren and third-year T Max Mitchell, among others, took several reps with the first team and impressed the coaching staff with the veteran starters managing their bodies. "It's got a chance to be a really good group," HC Robert Saleh said. "Over the course of last year all the guys got experience, we feel really good about not only the front five, but the next six or seven guys, eight guys even."
