At a Thursday night banquet, just three days before Super Bowl III, Joe Namath stepped to the speaker's podium and announced, "the Jets will win Sunday….I guarantee it." When Namath and the Jets delivered a 16-7 win over the 17 ½ point favorite Baltimore Colts, the stature and credibility of the rival AFL was on the same level as the established NFL.
