Here are three stats to know, and more, from the Jets' 31-6 loss at Arizona on Sunday afternoon:
For Sherwood, a Forest of Tackles
MLB Jamien Sherwood was being hard on himself when he discussed his and his defense's tackling, as one might expect, following the loss at Arizona. "That's something we harp on every day," Sherwood said. "I missed a few. I feel my communication was good, but obviously wasn't good enough. ... Obviously super-upset with myself, figuring out ways where I can be better for my teammates, for my whole team."
But a more positive spin on Sherwood's game is to consider where the Jets would have been had he not contributed his career-high 17 tackles to the cause. The number is significant in several ways. It's the third-most by any player in an NFL game this season. And it's tied for the fourth-most by a Jets defender and tied for second-most by a Jets LB in a game since 1994. (David Harris had 24 tackles vs. Washington in 2007 and S Victor Green had 20- and 18-tackle games in 1996.)
One more Sherwood note: He was in on 2.5 tackles for loss/no gain (one full tackle for minus-1 yard, 3 half tackles on no-gains) at Arizona. He's second unofficially on the Jets defense with 10 TFLNG behind Quincy Williams' 13, and if we factor out zero-yard stops, Jamien leads the Jets' D with 6 TFLs to Quincy's 5.
BA's Short-Yardage Excellence Continues
Braelon Allen did it again ... and again. The rookie RB came in twice on third-and-1 vs. the Cards, on the Jets' opening drive and again in the third quarter. and converted both times. He's now up to 9-for-9 on third-and-1/third-and-2 conversion runs without a miss. One more conversion and he'll be one of 5 NFL RBs to go 10-for-10 or better in a season in those situations since 1991. On that list at No. 3 is Jets RB Shonn Greene, who converted all 11 of his third-and-shorts in 2012.
Not to jinx young No. 0 but if Allen fails to convert just once, he's off this list. But we suspect that won't impact one of his quests as a Jets rookie, moving the chains a yard or more at a time every time.
Name That First Down Link
The Jets yielded 28 first downs to the Cardinals. That is the most by an opponent since the Browns racked up 29 first downs in 2022 Game 2 at Cleveland. Interestingly, that game was the Green & White's remarkable comeback from 13 points down in the final 1:30 for their 31-30 road victory.
That was the second game of WR Garrett Wilson's Jets career and he produced the first 100-yard receiving game and 2-touchdown game of his career. And the Jets had their only 4-TD passer of the last 5 seasons in that game ... Joe Flacco.
Things could change this week in Indy but Colts HC Shane Steichen said Flacco is his starting QB "right now" and so there is the prospect of 80-plus years of QB taking the MetLife field Sunday when Aaron Rodgers, who'll turn 41 in December, meets Flacco, 40 in January, in a battle for the ageless. Rodgers' Packers were 3-0 vs. Flacco's Ravens and Broncos when they first squared off from 2013-19.
