Three stats to know, and more, as the Jets come off their bye week and head into their 12th game of the season vs. Seattle at MetLife Stadium on Sunday:
Laying Down the (Kin)Law
DL Javon Kinlaw has made his presence felt inside as well as outside the Jets' locker room in his first season wearing green and white. Inside, he's impressed not only his defensive mates but the big guy on the other side of the ball. "Every week, Javon brings it," QB Aaron Rodgers has said. "He's a mountain of a man and a good friend of mine and a great player."
Outside, Kinlaw is on target to set personal bests in his fifth NFL season for most defensive snaps (442 with 6 games to go compared to 546 as a 49ers rookie in 2020), total tackles (32 this year, 33 in '20) and sacks (2.5 this season, 3.5 last season).
The latest sack he registered, though, gave him three statistical items that he had never acquired before. When the big right paw of Kinlaw swatted the ball out of Anthony Richardson's grasp in the third quarter against Indianapolis, it not only gave him his first pro stripsack but also his first forced fumble of any kind and, when he lugged the loose ball 4 yards to the Colts 25, his first fumble recovery.
Streaks in the Key of G
Some, but not all, of Garrett Wilson's pass-catching streaks ended with his four receptions for 18 yards vs. Indy. Most impressive, and most unfortunate, was the conclusion of his 8 consecutive games with 5-plus catches. Yet we have no doubt G will start up another such streak to try to take down the franchise record holder, Laveranues Coles, who had 5-plus in the last 13 games of the first Jets stay of his career in 2002.
Wilson also didn't move the sticks once at Arizona, ending a streak of 17 games in which he recorded at least one receiving first down. He also had 20 straight games with a first down from midway through his '22 rookie season into '23.
But some streaks keep rolling along. Wilson's 4-catch stretch has reached 11 games, with Jerricho Cotchery's 15 in a row, the longest streak by a Jet since 2000, on the horizon. And Wilson has caught at least one pass in all 45 games he and the Jets have played since he arrived in '22. If he catches a pass against Seattle on Sunday, he will break his tie with Wayne Chrebet (1995-97) for second-longest pass-catching streak from the start of a career as a Jets rookie, with only Keyshawn Johnson's 62 in a row (1996-99) remaining for next season.
Special Report: Surratt Tackles
A special HT to Chazz Surratt for putting his hat on Indy returners four times in the Jets' most recent game. Four special-teams tackles may not sound like a lot, but these days it is a STout amount. Two of his tackles stopped good punt returns by the Colts, two prevented longer kickoff returns. The fourth came two plays before the Kinlaw stripsack.
Surratt is the first Jet with four kick-coverage tackles in a game since Albert McClellan, whose Jets career lasted just five games in 2019, had four stops in Week 3 at New England. Surratt's 9 ST tackles lead the Jets, with Irvin Charles second at 6. Surratt's next special achievement, other than 5-plus tackles in a game, would be to get 4 again but this time in a win. Last Jet to do that: Marcus Williams with 4 ST tackles vs. Miami in London in 2015.
