Aaron Glenn has returned to Indianapolis for the NFL Scouting Combine, and no doubt not for the first time since he participated in the 1994 Combine and was ultimately drafted in the first round by the Jets.
And the new head coach of the Green & White made it clear again, in his first wide-ranging news conference since being introduced as the Jets' new head coach a month ago, what he thinks about the players he and his team will soon be adding as the draft process intensifies at Lucas Oil Stadium this week, with the free agency signing period kicking off two weeks later.
"We're looking for winners," Glenn told the reporters before the Combine's testing and drills start coming fast and furious on Wednesday. "We're looking for smart, tough, aggressive and resilient players. We're going to do everything we can to find those guys, and you can find them in all different spots — small schools, big-time schools, trades. Wherever we can find them, we're going to try to bring them on this team."
That's when the new Jets, rookies and veterans, will join the players who are still on the roster. And AG said that even with the offseason conditioning schedule not bringing the team back together until April, he's been reaching out to all the players under his new command.
"I've called each one of those guys and introduced myself," Glenn told Eric Allen and Ethan Greenberg of newyorkjets.com's on the Jets Live from the Combine show. "Just be authentic, be myself — something players figure out real quick is whether you're fake or not. I'm a very demanding coach but I'm not demeaning. I say that to every player. And the communication with the players has been really, really good."
Also, being a 15-season NFL cornerback himself, Glenn appreciates each player on the roster, from the quarterbacks to the defensive backs and at every position in between. That's a point he stressed when QB questions were posed about Aaron Rodgers' departure and if Tyrod Taylor is now the Jets starter.
"I don't want to disrespect any of the other players we have on our team," the head coach said of the lingering QB talk, ticking off the names of four prominent non-QBs in Quinnen Williams, Quincy Williams, Alijah Vera-Tucker and Joe Tippmann. "Obviously quarterback is an important position, but listen, everybody on our team is important."
And everyone brings different skills and traits to the table. Besides the aforementioned intelligence, toughness, aggressiveness and resilience, one quality Glenn values highly is something he had an abundance of as a player: speed.
He didn't get to show that talent off in his Combine in the old Hoosier Dome, not far from where he was talking with the media on Tuesday. Three decades ago, he came into that testing week with a hamstring injury that limited him to only nine reps on the bench press, although he recalled for Allen with a smile, "I thought I did it 12 times."

But at a private workout weeks later, Glenn wowed NFL scouts and observers with the speed that would in part elevate him to the Jets' 12th overall pick.
"I ran, I think it was, a 4.27 and the other one was a 4.32. That's what I knew I could do. I could run and cover receivers," he said, advising future Combine participants, "To me, if you're fast, you're fast, so go run. A lot of guys at the Combine don't run. You're fast, so just show everybody you can do that."
Glenn, general manger Darren Mougey and Jets scouts will be looking for that speed in the coming days as well as at pro days, private workouts and on video from past seasons, but they'll be searching for all the other skills that Glenn is seeking. Among the mental qualifications besides toughness is a New York state of mind that the native Texan feels will be all important to the team he and Mougey are building "to win, and to win now."
"I had this conversation with my wife maybe a week ago," he said. "It gets pretty emotional when I think about that first game, coming out in front of this team, knowing I'm the head coach of this team. I don't know what my reactions will be.
"But we're going to put our hard hats on. We're a blue-collar operation and we're ready to go to work. ... One of the things we're going to do is outwork people and that's all we're going to know. And I'm looking forward to that."
