The Jets' offense got off to fast start Sunday against the Rams scoring a touchdown on its first possession, but could not score in the second half. That left WRs Garrett Wilson and Davante Adams trying to make sense of it in the 19-9 loss to Los Angeles at MetLife Stadium.
"I really don't know," Wilson said about scoring 9 points despite outgaining the Rams, 321 to 242. "We have just got to be better. The red zone and a couple other things have been haunting us all year. We have got to be better when it matters and figure this out."
Following a stop by the Jets' defense on the opening drive, the offense put together a 14-play, 99-yard drive capped by an 11-yard touchdown strike from Aaron Rodgers to Adams. Wilson and Adams combined for 4 receptions for 43 yards on the drive including an 8-yard completion to Adams on fourth-and-2.
On the score, Rodgers, rolling to his right, layered the throw over Rams DE Jared Verse to Adams in the back of the end zone. Adams leaped and came down with both feet in bounds near the back boundary to give the Jets a 6-0 lead.
From there, the Jets registered 220 total yards and 11 first downs but failed to find the end zone again despite three trips into Rams' territory and one time in the red zone, in which they settled for a 21-yard field goal by Anders Carlson to close out the first half.
"I wouldn't say we struggled offensively," Adams said. "I would say that we struggled to score, which you could say is the same thing but, in a way, it was more disappointing that we were able to drive down the field and not score."
Adams finished the game with 7 receptions for 68 yards and the Jets' lone touchdown. Wilson had 6 receptions for 54 yards. The Jets were aggressive throughout, going for it on fourth down five times, including once from their own 33-yard-line.
"At this point in the season, we are trying to have the mindset of trying to be aggressive," Adams said. "We have a lot of people on the offensive side of the ball that can make plays so the whole team's mindset is just trying to be aggressive and do what we can to put up points."
Adams & Co. will finish the year with a road game against Buffalo in Week 17 before hosting Miami at MetLife Stadium for the season finale. Despite a 4-11 record, Wilson expects the offense to keep plugging way.
"I expect all the guys to put a lot of pride into our last few games," Wilson said. "We all love to do this and are expected to, and want to, do this at a high level. I don't expect anything other than that. I expect us to put our best foot forward and see where that puts us."
