Last Thursday night, WR Garrett Wilson registered two outstanding one-handed touchdowns grabs in the Jets' 21-13 victory over Houston, leading the third-year wideout to be named the AFC Offensive Player of the Week for Week 9.
For the game, Wilson, the 2022 Offensive Rookie of the Year, was targeted 10 times and registered 9 receptions for 90 yards and 2 touchdowns.
On the first drive of the second half, he hauled in a 21-yard touchdown pass from QB Aaron Rodgers, who was standing in against pressure. Rodgers put the ball out in front of Wilson, and he snagged it with one-hand at the 15-yard line before running into the endzone.
On the Jets' next offensive possession, on a third-and-19 play from Houston's 26-yard-line, Rodgers tested the Texans deep, and Wilson leaped and came down near the back of the endzone with another one-handed grab.
Wilson was originally ruled out of bounds, but after a challenge by interim HC Jeff Ulbrich, and a review, the ruling on the field was overturned.
"Oh, my goodness," HC Jeff Ulbrich said. "I was talking to the ref while they were reviewing it and said, 'Just for the sake of posterity, you have to say that is in just so it goes down in history.' It would rival the Odell [Beckam Jr.] catch. It was amazing."
Rodgers added: "Before the snap I knew it was third-and-extra-long. I was looking at the weak-side safety, I was like, 'If he drops down at all, I'm just going to say screw it; I'm going to throw it up to G.' I felt like I put it in a decent spot, but yeah, I didn't do a whole lot when it comes down to it. I just kind of lobbed one up there. He made an unbelievable catch."
The second touchdown grab was Wilson's fifth on the year, surpassing his previous career-high of 4 from his rookie season (2022). The score also gave him his first multi-touchdown game since Week 12 of 2022 versus Chicago.
In addition, according to Next Gen Stats, Wilson's second score had a completion probability of 13.6%, the fifth-most improbable completion of the season, and the most improbable by Rodgers since Week 1 of 2020.
"I was in on the second touchdown, and I turned around and I saw Aaron throw the ball," RB Breece Hall said. "So, I turned back around, and I saw Garrett catch it, and I knew it was in, and then I turned at the Texans sideline and was just smiling and like laughing at them."
Wilson's standout performance in primetime was a continuation of a dominant season by the Green & White's young wideout. On the year, Wilson has recorded 60 receptions, the most in the NFL, and 663 receiving yards, the third-most leaguewide.
In the last 5 weeks, Wilson has 40 catches (8 per game) for 472 yards (94.4) and 4 TDs. The catches and yards, over that stretch, lead the NFL.
