In his final game as a Jet, WR Mike Williams lined up in 71% (41 of 58) of the offensive snaps, was targeted twice and caught 1 pass in the team's 21-13 win over the Texans in Week 9. On Tuesday, the Jets sent Williams to the Steelers in exchange for a 2025 fifth-round draft pick and that opened up a temporary opening at their third wideout spot heading into Sunday's game at the Cardinals.
The Jets wideout group is headlined by the talented tandem of Garrett Wilson, whose 60 receptions lead the NFL and 663 yards rank third, and Davante Adams, who has registered 14 catches, 175 yards and 1 TD in his three games. Allen Lazard (30-412-13.7-5TD) is on Injured Reserve with a chest injury and his earliest possible return would be Dec. 8 vs. the Dolphins. Second-year WR Xavier Gipson, rookie Malachi Corley and special teams ace Irvin Charles will compete for time with Lazard on the mend and Williams in Pittsburgh.
"I think it's a great opportunity for a lot of guys," said offensive play-caller Todd Downing. "You have three guys in there who have been working really hard in that room, who have been busting their tails on scout team and showing the things they can do and their skill sets. So between Malachi and Gipson and Irv, those guys are all fighting for that opportunity. I think the cool thing is how they've approached the week is just that they're looking at is as how can I prove my reliability in certain roles and fight for that play time."
Olu Fashanu's Transition
With Alijah Vera-Tucker (ankle) inactive against the Texans, Jake Hanson got the start at right guard but went down with a hamstring injury 21 snaps into the game. Rookie Olu Fashanu, who played LT at Penn State and didn't begin cross-training at RT until August, was inserted into the lineup at RG against Houston and logged 37 snaps.
Fashanu, who started at RT vs. the Broncos and Vikings in Week 4-5, could get the call at RG Sunday against the Cardinals.
"There are a lot of challenges even though he's getting a little bit more exposure there in practice," said offensive play-caller Todd Downing. "It's still the first week that he's worked at guard, but I commend his competitive spirt and his resolve in there. He didn't bat an eye; he just went in there and fought his tail off.
"I think certainly one of the challenges can be the communication – he needs to make some of the line calls, so getting used to that and communicating with Morgan (Moses) and communicating with Tipp [Joe Tippmann]. Those are things he really has to speed up and amplify this week, so that's something we definitely have to push along."

Wounded Warrior
Earlier this week, RT Morgan Moses told reporters he's playing through a grade 2 MCL sprain, a meniscus issue and a fracture in his knee. Moses, who missed Weeks 4-5 games against the Broncos and the Vikings, didn't practice Wednesday but is expected to be in the lineup Sunday after taking all 58 snaps against the Texans.
"Morgan's been a tone-setter around here since the day I met him," Todd Downing said. "He's just one of those unique human beings who is infectious to those around him. You want to be around him; you want to play well for him, and you want to be out there with him. So, when he makes those kinds of sacrifices, I think it makes everybody kind of reflect on themselves and say how can I give a little bit more or maybe where am I stopping short of all I have to give. He's just so inspiring and such a great teammate."
