As part of the NFL's Salute to Service Week, the New York Jets hosted the Sixth Annual Soldiers to Sidelines (STS) Coaching Certification Clinic Presented by Ticketmaster.
The week-long program, supported by the Jets and Ticketmaster, took place virtually leading up to the Jets Salute to Service game against the Colts on Nov. 17. It provided active duty, military veterans, military spouses and Gold Star families from all branches of the military with an opportunity to receive their football coaching certification and become character-based sports coaches in their communities.
The rigorous and educational first five sessions workshops, that ran from Nov. 12-16 and featured more than 100 participants, were led by the Soldiers to Sidelines founder and 2022 NFL Salute to Service Award nominee Harrison Bernstein.
Bernstein and lecturers taught several topics, broke down film, told personal stories and answered questions about their experiences in football. Presentations were given by coaches and front office members from the high school, college and professional levels.
"The whole week was just a great overall experience," said Maurice Allen, an alumni of the program. "I learned so much when I took it and developed and used it as a resource to build relationships with other coaches that set me up for the future."
Allen received his certification in 2018 and the connections he made through the program have led to his success as the head coach of South Paulding High School in Georgia. Allen spent a month this past summer with the Jets as the team's Soldiers to Sidelines coaching intern.
"I never really had any aspirations or idea that I could ever coach in the NFL," Allen said. "But after spending time with STS and with the Jets during the summer, I think totally different now. You go through the program, and you come out feeling valued and feel important. It was great in helping me transition from the military, which I separated from in 2016."
At the end of the week, the Green & White hosted more than 30 of the participants at MetLife Stadium for a final clinic. The coaches got a chance to meet Tony Richardson, a former Jets players and Jets nominee for the 2024 NFL Salute to Service Award.
The coaches who attended the final workshop at MetLife Stadium were each surprised with a locker designated for them in the Jets' official team locker room. They received custom nameplate as well as a care package courtesy of Ticketmaster that included co-branded Jets gear, a signed mini helmet and a custom coaching whiteboard.
To conclude day, the participants hosted a youth football clinic featuring high school players from the New York and New Jersey who they had spent the week planning the program for.
To celebrate the newly-certified coaches, all attended the Jets Salute to Service game vs. the Colts participating in pregame tailgate party and were recognized for accomplishments on the field during the game.
In honor of Salute to Service week, the Jets and Ticketmaster collaborated with Soldiers to Sidelines to support active service members and veterans on their journeys to become football coaches. Soldiers to Sidelines conducted a Virtual Football Coaching Certification Seminar and an in-person seminar at MetLife Stadium for a full day of strategic coaching forums and classes. At the in-person seminar, Soldier Coaches were given a tour of the Jets Locker Room and received a coaching experience at MetLife Stadium.
