The day that many of us Jets and Giants fans await for four years has finally arrived. It's the Green & White vs. the Red, White & Blue as the Jets host their MetLife Stadium mates in their every-four-years regular-season meeting.
And this one has a lot riding on it. With the Jets at 1-7 and on a three-game losing streak and the Giants at 2-7 and on a five-game skid, the team that wins will take a small step toward a respectable finish that both clubs envisioned for themselves in 2019. The losing side, on the other hand, will hear even more from fans and media in the week(s) ahead, as the Jets then prepare to travel to 1-8 Washington while the Giants enter their bye week.
The Jets are ready to do battle in their quadrennial joust with the Jints. QB Sam Darnold's game at Miami, even though ultimately unsatisfying, was arguably his second-best showing of the season as he completed 69% of his passes, reached 260 passing yards — the Jets' second-best passing yardage total of the season behind Darnold's 338 yards in the win over Dallas — and threw a touchdown pass to WR Jamison Crowder.
Darnold should get the full return of one the weapons that were envisioned for him in the preseason with TE Chris Herndon's first game of the season following his NFL suspension and hamstring pull rehab. Herndon was active last week but did not play.
Also returning after missing three weeks with an ankle injury is LT Kelvin Beachum, brining with him perhaps a little return to stability along the Jets' offensive line. But C Ryan Kalil (knee) will sit out his second straight game, with Jonotthan Harrison moving into the pivot for him.
The Giants' injury report was less daunting during the week — only four players listed to Jets' 21 — but the four are all offensive starters for Big Blue. WR Sterling Shepard and TE Evan Engram will be missing as targets for Daniel Jones, and C Jon Halapio and RT Mike Remmers will be out as far as protectors for the rookie QB.
Is it a coincidence, on the occasion of the 14th all-time Jets-Giants regular-season matchup, that the Jets will be wearing their new uniforms, the all-Stealth Black jerseys and pants, for only the second time this season. (The first was for the Game 2 Monday night game against Cleveland.)
Here is the Jets' full seven-player inactive list for today's game:
- CB Darryl Roberts
- S Blake Countess
- LB Neville Hewitt
- C Ryan Kalil
- LB C.J. Mosley
- DL Jordan Willis
- OL Conor McDermott
Newly signed LB Paul Worrilow (uniform No. 40) and CBs Maurice Canady (37) and rookie Bless Austin (31) are all listed as active for the Jets.
And here are the Giants' inactives:
- QB Alex Tanney
- LB Chris Peace
- G Chad Slade
- T Mike Remmers
- C Jon Halapio
- WR Sterling Shepard
- TE Evan Engram
John Hussey today is working his fourth Jets game as referee since 2015. Hussey's other three games were mostly positive for the Green & White — the 20-7 MNF win at Indianapolis in Game 2 and the 23-20 overtime verdict over the Giants in Game 12, both in 2015, and the 21-12 loss at Buffalo in the 2017 season opener.
